Three Pirates' men's basketball players earned All-Western State Conference honors in voting by the conference coaches following the 2023-24 regular season. Sophomores Caleb Gilbert and Carter Alexander along with freshman Reese Widerburg each were named first team All-WSC for their play in the conference season.

VC Upsets Hancock in Season Finale

The Pirates' men's basketball team finished the regular season on a high note with a 66-62 upset win over state No. 11-ranked Allan Hancock at the Athletic Event Center. Caleb Gilbert led five players in double figures with 12 points to go along with five steals and four blocked shots. With the victory, VC (15-13, 8-4) cemented its third place standing in the Western State Conference North Division.

The Pirates' men's basketball team held off Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon for a 50-41 victory at the SBCC Sports Pavilion. Vernon Henry was 9-10 at the free throw line and scored 13 points to lead Ventura (14-13, 7-4) and Caleb Gilbert contributed 10 points. Derrick Young had eight points and a team-best eight rebounds in the victory.

Pirate Men Produce Big Win at Pierce

The VC men's basketball team turned in a dominant performance, defeating Los Angeles PIerce 85-45 Wednesday in Woodland Hills. Caleb Gilbert led the effort for VC (13-13, 6-4) with 25 points and 15 rebounds while Reese Widerburg and Carter Alexander recorded 17 and 16 points, respectively. Beckham Rutherford came off the bench to score 10 points and Dominik Contreras grabbed seven boards in a reserve role.

The VC men's basketball team battled back from a 10-point deficit in the final six minutes of play, only to see Moorpark sink a pair of free throws in the final seconds in the Pirates' 72-71 loss against the Raiders Saturday at the Athletic Event Center. Reese Widerburg netted 18 points to lead VC (12-13, 5-4) and Carter Alexander scored 15. Less than a month after hanging 106 points on Cuesta in San Luis Obispo, the Pirates men's basketball team could not find their shooting touch at home, dropping a 67-54 decision to the Cougars Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. Kai Johnson led VC with 13 points and Reese Widerburg netted 10 in the setback. Landreau Tate and Caleb Gilbert each pulled in seven rebounds for VC (12-12, 5-3).

Caleb Gilbert netted 11 while Mykayle McCoy, Caleb Geisendorfer and Vernon Henry all added seven points in the balanced attack.

The Pirates' men's basketball team had six players score between eight and 16 points Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center as they defeated Los Angeles Harbor 87-58. Caleb Gilbert had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds and Carter Alexander totaled 16 points to lead the way for Ventura (6-9) in the victory. Dominik Contreras and Reese Widerburg each scored nine while Mykayle McCoy and Kai Johnson each scored eight.

Alexander's 32 Not Enough for Ventura at Valley

Sophomore guard Carter Alexander posted a career-high 32 points Wednesday but it was not enough as the Pirates' men's basketball team dropped an 81-73 decision at Los Angeles Valley. The Camarillo high School product was 12-18 from the floor and 6-6 at the free throw line in the setback. Blake Berry added 10 points for the Pirates, who committed 24 turnovers against the Monarchs in the contest.

Carter Alexander led the way for the Pirates with 24 points, including four made 3-pointers, and Kai Johnson netted 23 with seven assists. The VC men's basketball team held off the hard charging Los Angeles Southwest Cougars for an 84-81 victory at the Athletic Event Center on Thanksgiving-Eve. Ventura had five players in double figures led by Caleb Geisendorfer's 21 points and nine rebounds. Caleb Gilbert totaled a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards while Reese Widerburg contributed 15 points. Vernon Henry and Beckham Rutherford each tallied 11 points and Henry dished out seven assists.
