2022 Ventura College Softball Team News
Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2021-22, achieving an overall 3.26 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a solid 3.19 overall GPA in the spring. A total of 123 Pirates earned Dean's List honors in the fall of 2021 with a 3.5 GPA or better while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 51 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In the spring, 112 VC student athletes were featured on the Dean's List with 41 posting perfect GPA's.
Ventura College softball's Lauren Albrent was name dthe Western State Conference North Division Player of the Year in voting by the conference coaches following the 2022 season. 10 other Pirates also earned All-WSC honors, including first team accolades to Ashlyn Flinchum, Isabel Gallegos, Ahlyssa Guzman and Abby Strong.
The VC softball team was four outs away from forcing a decisive Game 3 in their first round playoff series at Palomar on Saturday. Then they weren't. The Pirates led 3-0 with two outs in bottom of the sixth inning before the Comets rallied for four runs to defeat Ventura and take the series. Isabel Gallegos paced VC (27-14) with a pair of hits and a run batted in. Kat Tafoya and Ciana Garcia also recorded an RBI each in the heartbreaking loss.
The Pirate softball team dropped Game 1 of their first round Southern California Regional Playoff series at Palomar College Friday, 4-1. Second-year shortstop Abby Strong was 2-1 on the day with a double and a run scored to lead Ventura (27-13) while Ahlyssa Guzman also recorded a pair of hits, including one double. LeAnna De La Cruz had the only run batted in of the game for VC.
The VC softball team will be playing in the post-season. The Pirates (27-12) have been seeded No. 11 in the Southern California Regional Playoffs and will travel to No. 6 Palomar (31-7) in San Marcos Friday and Saturday May 6 and 7 for a best-of-three-series. Game 1 is set for a 2:00 pm first pitch on Friday.
The Pirate softball team scored 12 runs in the top of the third inning in posting a 17-0 five-inning rout of Santa Monica in VC's regular season finale. Ahlyssa Guzman, Leanna De La Cruz, Ciana Garcia and Abby Strong batted in three runs each in the balanced offensive attack for Ventura (27-12, 10-2). STarting pitcher Kat Tafoya allowed a single hit while striking out six Corsairs and Morgan Albertsen finished the game in the pitcher's circle.
VC pitcher Ashlyn Flinchum did not allow a hit over five innings of work Thursday at Santa Barbara, striking out 10 batters as the Pirates defeated the Vaqueros 13-0. Ahlyssa Guzman, Lauren Albrent and Isabel Gallegos all hit home runs for the Pirates (26-12, 9-2) as they pounded out 11 hits to go with their 13 runs in the game.
The Ventura College softball team could not get anything going offensively Tuesday, falling at Moorpark 4-0. Ahlyssa Guzman and Isabel Gallegos were the only Pirates who managed a hit in the game. Jocelyn Ortega drew a walk and Courtney Terrazas was hit by a pitch as VC struggled to produce baserunners all afternoon against the Raiders.
In their final regular season home game of the year, the Pirate softball team defeated Oxnard 10-2 Tuesday, walking off with the run-rule victory in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leanna De La Cruz had a pair of hts, including a triple, with two runs scored and a run batted in while Ahlyssa Guzman scored three runs with a pair of hits. Isabel Gallegos had two hits and two RBI for VC (25-11, 8-1).
VC's Ashlyn Flinchum pitched a one-hitter, and Isabella Ayala had three hits, including a home run, with two runs batted in and a run scored as the Pirates blanked Allan Hancock 9-0 Thursday in six innings in Santa Maria. Ciana Garcia had a pair of doubles and three RBI and Ahlyssa Guzman singled and doubled and scored three times as Ventura (24-11, 7-1) kept pace in the Western State Conference standings.
The Ventura College softball team sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday en route to their 13-2 run-rule victory over the Cougars. Lauren Albrent smacked her ninth home run of the season and knocked in four runs in the fourth inning alone to pace Ventura (23-11, 6-1). Kat Tafoya gave up three hits in five complete innings of work in the circle with four K's to pick up the win.
The VC softball team dropped a tough 6-5 decision to Pasadena City College Saturday at the VC Softball Complex. After trailing 4-0 and 5-2, Ventura came back to tie the game at 5-5 before the Lancers scored a run in the top of the sixth to set the final margin. Lauren Albrent had a solo home run and Abby Strong, Courtney Terrazas and Ashley Perez all recorded RBI singles in the effort for Ventura (22-11, 5-1).
The Ventura College softball team, ranked No. 10 in Southern California, sp[lit a pair of games at SoCal No. 6 Cerritos on Friday. The Pirates dropped game one in a pitchers' duel 1-0 before taking the nightcap against the Falcons 9-4. Jocelyn Ortega picked up four hits on the day for Ventura (22-10, 5-1) while Abby Strong had two hits, including a double, with two runs batted in and a run scored. Ashlyn Flinchum took the hard-luck loss in the opener before picking up the save in the nightcap in the pitcher's circle.
The VC softball team easily defeated Santa Monica 11-0 Thursday at the VC Softball Complex to complete the first round of Western State Conference play. Isabella Ayala and Isabel Gallegos each went yard as the Pirates (21-9, 5-1) scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to set-up the run-rule victory. Ashlyn Flinchum, Morgan Albertsen and Kat Tafoya shared duties in the pitcher's circle no-hitting the Corsairs in the triumph.
The Pirate softball team resumed Western State Conference play on Tuesday winning their fourth straight game with a 7-3 victory over Santa Barbara. Ciana Garcia had a hit, scored a run and batted in a run and Abby Strong had two RBI with a single and a walk. Lauren Albrent was 1-1 while knocking in a pair of runs and stealing a base. Morgan Albertsen pitched a complete game, scattering six hits and giving up three runs late to pick up the victory for VC (20-9, 4-1).
The VC softball team put together a pair of wins Saturday to complete the Ventura Spring Games, defeating state No. 12-ranked Bakersfield 7-0 in the morning before pounding Santa Barbara 16-1 in a five-inning affair in the afternoon. Isabel Gallegos had a strong day with a pair of home runs and six runs batted in and Ahlyssa Guzman had five hits on the day. Ashlyn Flinchum pitched the complete game win against the Renegades while Kat Tafoya shut down the Vaqueros from the pitcher's circle for Ventura (19-9, 3-1).
