Pirate Athletics Excels in the Classroom in 2024-25

Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2024-25 with a total of 101 Pirates achieving a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) or higher, earning mention on the Dean's List in the fall 2024 term while taking in 12 or more units of study. Meanwhile, Pirate Athletics had 99 student athletes qualify for the Dean's List in the spring 2025 semester. In the fall, 46 student athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA. while 44 posted perfect GPA's in the spring of 2025.

Overall, all 17 of 19 VC teams had above a 3.0 GPA in the fall, and 14 squads repeated that success in the spring.

Women's volleyball, coached by Brad Lyans, led the way in the fall with a 3.53 team GPA, followed by women's basketball, coached by Ned Mircetic, and women's track and field directed by Tom Czerwinski.

Women's cross country, headed by coach Martin Macial posted a 3.5 team GPA in the spring ahead of men's golf coached by Chad Wright and men's swimming mentored by Mary Giles.

The Pirates' men's and women's tennis teams received national recognition for their academic achievement by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

VC football again ranked near the top of the Southern California Football Association's Scholar-Athlete Team with 17 student athletes honored.

Ventura College Athletics has long been a champion of academic achievement among its student athletes. Many Pirate programs have earned state and national honors for their work in the classroom, and VC has had 43 California Community College Athletic Association State Scholar Teams since the award was created in 1996, a state record. VC has had at least one team honored academically by the 3C2A all but one year, minus the Covid year of 2020-21, in each year since the fall of 1997.
