Shai Daniels and Viola Barrios along with Talia Behrens and Sadie Lishman , the two remaining duos for VC in the Western State Conference Pairs Tournament, showed up to pouring rain at Moorpark Saturday to face each other in the quarterfinal match. VC's No. 1 team of Daniels and Barrios prevailed and finished in the Top-4 of the WSC.
Daniels and Barrios defeated their teammates 21-11, 21-16 to move to the semifinal round while Behrens and Lishman, VC's No. 2 pair, went on to the consolation side of the bracket.
Behrens and Lishman dropped a close three set match to a team from Santa Barbara in the consolation semifinal. They finished strong, beating Bakersfield's top-seeded team in straight sets, earning them the No. 7-seed out of the conference going to next week's 3C2A SoCal Regional Pairs Tournament.
Daniels and Barrios had a challenging couple of matches following their victory, the first against an impressive Santa Monica pair who was 2-0 against VC this season. The Pirates kept it close but couldn't overcome the Corsairs and lost in two sets, 21-17, 21-16.
After an upset in the other semifinal match, Daniels and Barrios faced the No. 1-seed in the tournament, Moorpark's top pair, in the bronze medal match. Barrios put the Pirates up 18-16 with a big swing down the seam in the first set, but Moorpark pushed prevail 21-19. Another big swing from Barrios brought the Pirates to 17-17 tie in set two, but again the Raiders finished with some big plays to win 21-18 placing the VC pair in fourth.
The two teams will compete in the SoCal Regional Pairs Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday May 2 and 3 at Mt. San Antonio College. Meanwhile, the Pirate team will travel to San Diego Mesa on Tuesday April 29 as the No. 8 seed in the 3C2A SoCal Team Playoffs facing No. 1 Mesa and No. 9 Long Beach with a third straight trip to the State Tournament on the line.
