Pirate Baseball Earns National Recognition for Academic Excellence

The American Baseball Coaches Association is proud to recognize the nearly 700 member college and high school programs from across the country that have been awarded the 2021-22 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, which is presented by Sports Attack. VC achieved an overall grade point average of 3.30 for the entire 2021-22 academic year to earn recognition from the ABCA.

The VC baseball team had nine players honored on the All-Western State Conference team in voting by the conference coaches last month. Leading the way were four first-team selections including infielder Reiss Calvin, first baseman John Oleson and outfielders JR Godinez and Nick Schnopp. Ventura finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 22-18, 15-9 in WSC North Division play.

Baseball Upends Moorpark in Regular Season Finale

The Pirate baseball team ended the regular season on a high note Saturday with an 11-1 victory over Moorpark at Pirate Park. Cooper Smith had an outstanding start on the mound, scattering three hits over six complete innings facing one batter over the minimum while keeping the Raiders scoreless. Reiss Calvin was 4-5 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the 12-hit Pirate attack.

Ventura right fielder Nick Schnopp had a pair of hits, including a ninth-inning RBI single, but the Pirates dropped a 6-5 decision at LA Pierce on Friday.
Ventura Drops Close Decision at Pierce

The Pirate baseball team's quest for the post season took a shot Friday in a 6-5 setback against Los Angeles Pierce Friday in a game played at LA Valley. VC (21-18, 14-9) scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and had the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on first when the Brahmas retired the side. Nick Schnopp had two hits and a run batted in in the final frame, and John Oleson also had a pair of hits with two RBI in the game for Ventura.

Ventura's top three batters JR Godinez, Reiss Calvin and John Oleson all recorded two runs batted in to lead the way while Ramon Torres hit a home run and scored twice. Jared Hughes pitched six innings of relief to pick up the win on the mound.

In a battle for second place in the Western State Conference North Division, the Vaqueros took a 7-0 lead before Ventura got on the board with a five-run seventh. The Pirate baseball team had its comeback bid fall short Tuesday in their 7-5 setback at Cuesta, Ventura (19-16, 12-7) trailed 7-3 before scoring a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but they could get no closer to the conference-leading Cougars. KJ Moo-Young had a pair of hits and a walk with two runs scored to lead the effort while Andrew Savage and Reiss Calvin each had a pair of runs batted in.

The Pirate baseball team had an excellent game, except for one inning. Leading 7-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates allowed 16 batters to come to the plate scoring 11 runs as VC dropped the 11-7 decision under the lights at Mt. San Antonio. Andrew Savage had a pair of hits with two runs batted in and a run scored and Casey Turturici recorded two hits, including a triple, with one RBI and one run scored to lead the Pirates (19-15, 12-6).

The Pirate baseball team won its 10th game in 11 outings on Thursday with a 12-9 victory at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington. Ramon Torres was 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and a run batted in, and Nick Schnopp and Julien Monks each hit home runs to propel VC (19-14, 12-6). Andrew Savage and KJ Moo-Young also belted out three hits each while Dawson Radik picked up the win on the mound and Ryan Sweeney earned the save.

KJ Moo-Young had four hits, including a double, with four runs scored and four runs batted in to lead VC's 19-hit attack against the Wildcats. Jake Read picked up the win on the mound despite yielding seven runs over five innings of work with six strikeouts.

The Ventura College baseball team was on its way to a ninth straight win on Saturday before Moorpark scored five runs n the bottom of the eighth. The Pirates dropped the 8-7 decision to the Raiders, their first setback in four weeks. JR Godinez had three hits, scored three runs and knocked in another to lead the offense for VC (17-14, 12-6) while Julien Monks scored a pair of runs. Cooper Smith pitched into the seventh inning giving up three runs, two earned, and did not factor in the decision.

The Pirate baseball team trailed visiting Moorpark 6-0 in the middle of the third inning before rallying for a 14-9 victory over the Raiders Thursday. John Oleson paced the VC offense with five of the team's 19 hits with four runs batted in and a run scored while Casey Turturici had four hits, two of them doubles, with an RBI and a run scored. JR Godinez had three hits and scored four times and Julien Monks also recorded three hits, including a double, with three runs scored.

Jake Read threw into the eighth inning with an outstanding start on the mound, giving up four runs, two earned, and striking out a pair to pick up the win. Casey Turturici had a pair of hits, knocked in two runs and scored two more and JR Godinez recorded two hits with a run scored in the victory for the VC (16-13, 11-5).

The VC baseball team won its sixth straight game Saturday, defeating Los Angeles Pierce 8-2 at Pirate Park. Starting pitcher Cooper Smith threw five scoreless innings giving up three hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Garrick Levesque knocked in two runs and scored two more while Nick Schnopp had a pair of hits, including a double, with two runs scored. VC (15-13, 10-5) now sits in a second-place tie in the Western State Conference North Division standings.

The VC baseball team was the "visitor" on Thursday at Pirate Park, as LA Pierce "hosted" the game two of the three-game set, but the results were familiar for Ventura. The Pirates rallied for seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to post a come-from-behind 7-5 win over the Brahmas, VC's fifth straight triumph and their ninth win in the past 11 games. Casey Turturici provided a game-winning three-run home run in the top of the eighth to set the final margin.

Nick Schnopp contributed two hits and three RBI as VC (13-13, 8-5) won with a run in their final at-bat for the third time during their four-game winning streak.

In the last two games, the Pirates baseball team has defeated Hancock with its last at-bat. Saturday in Santa Maria, VC built a big lead then held late in their 16-13 win over the Bulldogs to earn the series sweep. The Pirates led 16-5 at the seventh inning stretch before allowing eight Hancock runs over the final three frames to make things interesting. Reiss Calvin had four hits, including a double, with four runs scored and JR Godinez had two singles and a double with two runs scored and three runs batted in to lead the attack for Ventura (12-13, 7-5).

Robby Keister pitched a perfect 10th with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win on the mound for Ventura (11-13, 6-5).

VC second baseman Reiss Calvin has had a solid start to his career for the Pirates. That start was accentuated Thursday when he hit for the cycle with six runs batted in leading Ventura to an 11-5 victory over Oxnard at Pirate Park. Calvin hit a two-run home run in the first, a two-RBI double in the fifth, a single in the seventh, and a two-RBI triple in the eighth for the rare baseball feat. Julien Mons had three hits, including a double, with two RBI in a supporting role for Ventura (7-11, 2-3).

The VC baseball team plated runs in eight of its nine at bats Saturday in posting a 14-9 victory over Citrus at Pirate Park. Reiss Calvin hit a triple and a single with four RBI and a run scored as the Pirates pounded out 16 base hits against the Owls on the afternoon. Cooper Smith pitched into the sixth inning and Dawson Radik threw 3.2 innings of relief to pick up the win.

On Friday, the big inning went against Ventura as they gave up an eight-run fifth in their 11-8 setback at College of the Canyons in Valencia. Hunter Jones pitched well into the fifth before leaving the game during the Cougars' rally. Right Fielder Nick Schnopp had three hits, including a double, with one run scored and one run batted in to pace VC (4-8).

The VC baseball team scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning Thursday and made it hold up in their 7-6 victory over Riverside at Pirate Park. Reiss Calvin and Casey Turturici each had two-RBI doubles in the frame as Ventura opened up a 7-1 lead against the Tigers, who scored runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings in their comeback bid. Max Flame picked up the win on the mound with five innings of work, allowing two hits and one run.

Nick Schopp, Casey Turturici and Ramon Torres all had two hits for the Pirates (3-7). JR Godines, Reiss Calvin and Connor Vogel all had one hit and scored a run in the defeat.

JC baseball can sometimes be a little crazy, That certainly was the case Friday afternoon at Pirate Park when 26 batters came to the plate in the first inning-and-a-half with 12 runs crossing the plate. Visiting Bakersfield then jumped out to a 10-6 advantage in the fifth, and VC's comeback bid fell short in their 11-10 loss to the Renegades. Shortstop Ramon Torres had three runs batted in, as did third baseman Gage Allen to lead Ventura (3-5).

JR Godinez had three hits, including a double, with a run scored and two runs batted in and Yeongjun Jang also produced three hits with a double while scoring a run. Cooper Smith started and pitched five innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out five batters.

In JC baseball anything can happen. Friday was one of those days as the Ventura College baseball team scored six runs without a hit in the sixth inning to break open a 5-2 game en route to their 11-5 victory over Fullerton at Pirate Park. Max Flame gave up one earned run over the first four frames, and Ryan Sweeney pitched a scoreless fifth to pick up the win for VC (2-3). Casey Turturici led the Pirates at the plate with a pair of hits, two runs batted in and a run scored.

Jake read made the start on the hill, pitching four innings and giving up two runs, one earned, and Hunter Jones picked up the win with five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits.
