VC baseball mounted multiple comebacks and pounded out 16 hits, but a late surge by Rio Hondo sent the Pirates to a 14-12 defeat in a three-hour slugfest Thursday afternoon in Whittier. Aiden Nykoluk, Brandon Contreras, Hector Pina and Matthew Ramirez all pounded out three hits for VC. The Roadrunners used a four-run seventh to create decisive separation, then held off a ninth-inning Ventura push to claim the high-scoring contest.
After falling behind 6-2 through two innings, Ventura's offense responded with a four-run third to erase the early deficit and tie the game 6-6. The Pirates continued to trade blows with Rio Hondo, matching a fourth-inning run and then taking their first lead with two runs in the fifth for a 9-7 advantage. Rio Hondo answered with three runs in the sixth to move back in front 10-9, setting up the pivotal seventh inning.
The hosts broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, stretching the margin to 14-11 and putting Ventura on its heels. The Pirates' bullpen could not fully contain a Rio Hondo lineup that finished with 16 hits and drew eight walks, as the miscues in the field also proved costly. Ventura committed four errors to Rio Hondo's one, giving the Roadrunners extra chances in several scoring frames.
Ventura still made things interesting in the ninth. Trailing by three, the Pirates pushed across a run to cut the deficit to 14-12 and brought the potential tying run to the plate before the rally ended.
Offensively, Ventura's middle of the order led an aggressive attack that matched Rio Hondo's 16-hit total and produced significant power. Pina starred with three hits and four RBIs, including a home run that highlighted Ventura's extra-base barrage. Ramirez added three hits and three RBIs, consistently delivering in run-producing spots as the Pirates put up runs in six different innings.
Nykoluk turned in one of the Pirates' most complete performances at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI while collecting multiple extra-base hits, including a double and a triple. His production at the top of the lineup helped ignite Ventura's big third-inning rally and the fifth-inning surge that briefly put the Pirates in front. Ventura finished with five walks and left 12 runners on base, underscoring both the effectiveness of the offense and the missed opportunities in a game where every run mattered.
Despite the loss, Ventura showed resilience by erasing an early four-run hole and repeatedly battling back in a hostile environment. The Pirates will look to build on the offensive momentum in their second half of the home-and-home series with the Roadrunners Saturday Feb. 7 at 1:00 pm at Pirate Park.
