The Pirates had the champs on the ropes. As late as the 15:20 mark of the second half, the Ventura College men's basketball team had the advantage over defending state champion and top-seeded San Diego City College Saturday night, before the No. 9-seeded Pirates fell to the Knights, 91-84 in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Finals. Malcolm Ruff had a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead VC (22-8), while Jacob Alonzo and Isiah Reyes each netted 15 in the season-ending loss.

Isiah Reyes had a career-high 35 points to lead No. 9-seed Ventura to an 87-75 victory at No. 8 Copper Mountain. The Pirates will next play in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Finals on Saturday March 3.
Pirates Advance to Regional Final With Road Victory

It was a 200 mile trip for the No. 9-seed Pirates' men's basketball team to play at No. 8 Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree Friday night. VC made the most of it with an 87-75 victory over the Fighting Cacti in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Semifinals. Isiah Reyes had a career-high 35 points while Jacob Alonzo contributed 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Malcolm Ruff recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The victory secures outright the Western State Conference North Division championship for the Pirates (21-8, 9-1), their third straight title and the 22nd overall for the program.Terrell Handy-Johnson had 14 points and Isiah Reyes netted 11 while Jacob Alonzo handed out seven assists for Ventura.

Alonzo, Reyes Lead Pirates to Another WSC Victory

Coming back from a difficult overtime loss, the Pirates' men's basketball team bounced back with a solid 84-70 victory over visiting Cuesta Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. VC's dynamic guard combo of Jacob Alonzo and Isiah Reyes lead the way, each scoring 22 ponts and each pulling in seven rebounds. Alonzo had four assists in the game and Reyes recorded three steals as Ventura remained atop the Western State Conference North Division, tied with Hancock. Terrell Handy-Johnson netted 15 in the victory.

Pirates Complete Perfect First Round of WSC Play at Cuesta

The VC men's basketball completed its first of two circuits through the Western State Conference North Division with a perfect 5-0 record with a 93-82 victory at Cuesta College Wednesday night in San Luis Obispo. Isiah Reyes scored 20 points and four assists and Isaac Ramirez totaled 19 on a perfect 6-6 3-point shooting performance as Ventura (17-7, 5-0) maintained a one-game lead over Hancock and a three-game lead over Cuesta, Moorpark and Oxnard with five games remaining.

Jacob Alonzo added 21 points, including five made 3-pointers, as the Pirates (14-7, 2-0) came back from a 20-point deficit midway through the first half to claim the victory. Malcolm Ruff had 13 points and 12 rebounds for VC.

Pirate freshman John Williams scored a game-high 24 points, 20 of them coming in the second half, as the Ventura College men's basketball team opened Western State Conference North Division play with a 77-67 victory over visiting Allan Hancock College Saturday at the Athletic Event Center. Williams also grabbed eight rebounds, and Jacob Alonzo had eight assists with eight boards. Isiah Reyes turned in 17 points for VC (13-7, 1-0) in the win.

Pirates Fall to Canyons in Non-Conference Finale

In their final outing before Western State Conference play begins, the Pirates' men's basketball team dropped a 91-85 decision to visiting College of the Canyons Thursday night at the Athletic Event Center. Isaac Ramirez scored 20 points on the nigt, making six 3-pointers, to lead the Pirates who came back from a 53-40 deficit at halftime to take a lead in the second half before ultimately falling to the Cougars.

Pirate sophomore Jacob Alonzo had 19 points and 12 assists, along with seven steals and three rebounds, while Malcolm Ruff netted 16 points with seven boards leading the VC men's basketball team past LA Valley 81-66 Thursday in Valley Glen. John Williams totaled nine points and Taylor Sturgeon added eight in the Pirates' final game before the Christmas holiday.

A slow start Sunday held the Pirates' men's basketball team back against Cerritos Sunday in the third place game of the Kirby Manon Pepsi / Wyndham Hotel Tournament at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. VC fell behind 8-0 in the early going and never recovered in dropping a 76-67 decision to the Falcons. Isaac Ramirez netted 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, and Jacob Alonzo added 16 for the Pirates (10-6) in the loss.

The Pirates' men's basketball team extended the host College of the Sequoias Giants before falling in overtime, 78-73 Saturday in the semifinals of the Kirby Mannon Pepsi / Wyndham Hotel Tournament in Visalia. Jacob Alonzo continued his stellar play for VC (10-5) with 27 points, four assists and three rebounds while Lamont Landers netted 13 points, including a game-tying bucket with three seconds remaining to send the game into the extra period. Darrell Handy-Johnson had 10 points and five rebounds.

After a trying 10 days for everyone in the Ventura community due to the Thomas Fire, the Pirates' men's basketball team returned to the court on Friday, holding on to defeat Pasadena City College 54-49 in the opening round of the Kirby Manon Pepsi / Wyndham Hotel Tournament at the College of the Sequoais in Visalia. Jacob Alonzo scored 15 points with six steals and three assists while Darrell Handy-Johnson and Malcolm Ruff each netted 10 points in the win.

Pirates Drop Last-Second Decision to State's No. 1 Team

Jacob Alonzo was the hero. With three seconds left he cashed in a John Williams assist for three, giving the Pirates' men's basketball team an 83-82 lead over top-ranked and undefeated San Bernardino Valley. But in the ensuing chaos, the Wolverines connected on a home run pass 90 feet down the floor for a lay-up, breaking the Pirates' collective hearts in a difficult 84-83 loss in the semifinals of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College. Alonzo and Isiah Reyes each finished with 17 points to lead the Pirates.

Men's Basketball Extends Winning Streak to Seven

It was something different but more of the same for the VC men's basketball team Friday as they rolled into the semifinals of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley with a 104-81 victory over Los Angeles Harbor. The different was Ventura's leading scorer, John Williams with 22 points against the Seahawks, leading the same balanced attack with seven players with seven points or more. Also the same was the win, the Pirates' seventh in a row and ninth in the last 10 games.

Lamont Landers (14) helped lead the Pirates to victory Tuesday with 14 points against visiting Santa Monica.
Pirates Surpass Century Mark In Victory

The VC men's basketball team returned home Tuesday and moved their winning streak to six games with a 102-77 win over Santa Monica at the Athletic Event Center. Lamont Landers and Dondre Watson each scored 12 points, leading seven players who scored eight or more points in the victory over the Corsairs.Isiah Reyes and John Williams each totaled 11 points and Malcolm Ruff had 10 for Ventura (8-2).

The Pirates' men's basketball team defeated previously unbeaten Cerritos 74-66 Saturday to capture the championship of the Irvine Valley Classic.
Men's Basketball Captures Irvine Valley Classic Title

VC sophomore Jacob Alonzo had 25 points, seven rebounds, five steals and a pair of assists to lead the Pirates' men's basketball team to a 74-66 victory over previously unbeaten Cerritos to tak ethe championship of the Irvine Valley Classic. Isiah Reyes netted 17 points with four assists and John WIlliams had 15 in the Ventura win.

VC Basketball Advances to Irvine Valley Classic Final

Darrell Handy-Johnson had 17 points and six rebounds while Jacob Alonzo came off the bench for 14 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals as the Pirates' men's basketball team won their fourth straight game, 74-69 over host Irvine Valley in the semifinals of the IVC Classic Friday night. Isiah Reyes netted 14 points with three assists and three steals and Malcolm Ruff had 11 points and six boards in the victory. John Williams contributed 12 points. The Pirates advance to the tournament final at 4:00 pm on Saturday Nov. 18 against Cerritos.

Men's Basketball Advances at Irvine Tournament

The VC men's basketball team defeated Long Beach City College 65-54 Thursday night to advance into the semifinals of the Irvine Valley Classic in Irvine. Darrell Handy-Johnson and Isiah Reyes each scored 12 points to lead the Pirates (5-2) and Jacob Alonzo scored eight points with 10 rebounds and three assists. John Williams netted nine points while Malcolm Ruff scored eight with five blocked shots. The Pirates will play the host Irvine Valley Lasers Friday in the tournament semifinals at 7:00 pm.

VC sophomore Taylor Sturgeon had 13 points, including three 3-pointers, to help lead Ventura to an 80-75 win over Modesto at the Ohlone Tournament Saturday.
Men's Basketball Claims Consolation Bracket at Ohlone

The VC men's basketball team captured the consolation championship at the Jonathan Wallace Memorial Tournament at Ohlone College in Fremont Saturday with an 80-75 victory over Modesto. John Williams led VC's balanced attack with 15 points and Isiah Reyes totaled 14. Taylor Sturgeon hit three 3-pointers en route to 13 points in the game for Ventura (4-2).

Men's Basketball Holds Off Lassen For Victory

The VC men's basketball team held off Lassen College 92-88 Friday afternoon in the consolation semifinal fo the Jonathan Wallace Memorial Tournament at Ohlone College in Fremont. Jacob Alonzo hit four 3-pointers and was a perfect 7-7 fro the free throw line to lead Ventura (3-2) with 21 points. Isiah Reyes had 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half.

Men's Basketball Opens on Short End in WPH Tournament

It certainly was not the opening game that VC envisioned. Battling turnovers and a sub-par shooting performance, the Ventura College men's basketball team dropped its season-opener to the visiting Orange Coast Pirates 92-76 Thursday night in the first round of the We Play Hard Tip-Off Tournament. Isiah Reyes netted 26 points with nine rebounds and five assists while John Williams added 20 points and six boards for Ventura (0-1). The Pirates will host LA Valley on Friday at 3:00 pm in the consolation semifinal.
