Alonzo Named 1st Team All State by CCCMBCA

Ventura College's Jacob Alonzo has been named first team All-State by the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association. The 5-foot-8 sophomore from Camarillo High School was named the Western State Conference Most Valuable Player in a vote of conference coaches last month. He led the state in free throw shooting, hitting a phenomenal 94.9 percent of his attempts, 93-98, missing just five free throws all season. Additionally he was fourth in the state in steals, averaging 3.0 thefts per game.

VC sophomore Malcolm Ruff had team highs with 26 points and 12 rebounds as the Pirates gave a strong run at top-seeded and defending state champion San Diego City Saturday before falling to the Kinghts in the regional Finals, 91-84.
Valiant Effort by Pirates Comes Up Short

The Pirates had the champs on the ropes. As late as the 15:20 mark of the second half, the Ventura College men's basketball team had the advantage over defending state champion and top-seeded San Diego City College Saturday night, before the No. 9-seeded Pirates fell to the Knights, 91-84 in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Finals. Malcolm Ruff had a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead VC (22-8), while Jacob Alonzo and Isiah Reyes each netted 15 in the season-ending loss.

Isiah Reyes had a career-high 35 points to lead No. 9-seed Ventura to an 87-75 victory at No. 8 Copper Mountain. The Pirates will next play in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Finals on Saturday March 3.
Pirates Advance to Regional Final With Road Victory

It was a 200 mile trip for the No. 9-seed Pirates' men's basketball team to play at No. 8 Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree Friday night. VC made the most of it with an 87-75 victory over the Fighting Cacti in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Semifinals. Isiah Reyes had a career-high 35 points while Jacob Alonzo contributed 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Malcolm Ruff recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Ventura College sophomore Jacob Alonzo has been named the Western State Conference North Division Most Valuable Player. Sophomore Isiah Reyes and freshman John Williams were named first team All-WSC Nortth, joining Alonzo while sophomores Malcolm Ruff and Isaac Ramirez each earned honorable mention nods. Pirate head coach Joey Ramirez was named conference Coach f the Year.

Men's Basketball No. 9-Seed, Headed to Copper Mountain Friday

The Ventura College men's basketball team has earned the No. 9 seed in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs and will travel to No. 8 Copper Mountain College for a 7:00 pm tip-off on Friday Feb. 23. The Pirates (21-8) are the 3-peat champions of the Western State Conference North Division while the Fighting Cacti (20-9) placed third in the Orange Empire Conference. Copper Mountain is located in the city of Joshua Tree, 200 miles east of Ventura in the Mojave Desert.

Darrell Handy-Johnson had 24 points and seven rebounds Saturday as VC defeated Santa Barbara to claim outright their third straight Western State Conference championship.

Darrell Handy-Johnson had a monster game with 24 points on 12-15 shooting and seven rebounds to lead the VC men's basketball team to a 79-62 victory over visiting Santa Barbara Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center. The victory secures outright the Western State Conference North Division championship for the Pirates (21-8, 9-1), their third straight title and the 22nd overall for the program.Terrell Handy-Johnson had 14 points and Isiah Reyes netted 11 while Jacob Alonzo handed out seven assists for Ventura.

Ventura Dominates Oxnard, Clinches WSC Title

The VC men's basketball team scored the first eight points of the game and opened up quick leads of 14-2 and 23-8 en route to an easy 103-80 victory at Oxnard College Wednesday night. isiah Reyes led the way with 22 points in the game while Johns Williams and Jacob Alonzo contributed 19 and 18 points, respectively. The Pirate win coupled with Allan Hancock's loss at Cuesta drops the Bulldogs one game behind VC in the standings with one game remaining, clinching at least a share of the Western State Conference title for Ventura.

Pirate Men Come From Behind to Defeat Moorpark

The VC men's basketball team trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, and faced a six point deficit with 5:26 remaining in the game before coming back to defeat Moorpark 70-65 on barbeque night at the Athletic Event Center. John Williams had a monster night with 19 points, 15 rebounds and five assists to lead the Pirates while Isiah Reyes came in with 16 points and four dimes. The win capped a night on which Ventura College honored the 1987 CCCAA State Champions, many of whom came back for a special pre-game ceremony.

Alonzo, Reyes Lead Pirates to Another WSC Victory

Coming back from a difficult overtime loss, the Pirates' men's basketball team bounced back with a solid 84-70 victory over visiting Cuesta Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. VC's dynamic guard combo of Jacob Alonzo and Isiah Reyes lead the way, each scoring 22 ponts and each pulling in seven rebounds. Alonzo had four assists in the game and Reyes recorded three steals as Ventura remained atop the Western State Conference North Division, tied with Hancock. Terrell Handy-Johnson netted 15 in the victory.

The Pirates' men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 96-94 decision at Allan hancock College Saturday in Santa Maria, dropping Ventura into a first-place tie with the Bulldogs atop the Western State Conference North Division standings. VC's dynamic guard duo of Isiah Reyes and Jacob Alonzo combined for 56 points but it was a little short as the Pirates had their five-game winning streak come to an end.

Pirates Complete Perfect First Round of WSC Play at Cuesta

The VC men's basketball completed its first of two circuits through the Western State Conference North Division with a perfect 5-0 record with a 93-82 victory at Cuesta College Wednesday night in San Luis Obispo. Isiah Reyes scored 20 points and four assists and Isaac Ramirez totaled 19 on a perfect 6-6 3-point shooting performance as Ventura (17-7, 5-0) maintained a one-game lead over Hancock and a three-game lead over Cuesta, Moorpark and Oxnard with five games remaining.

The VC men's basketball team made quick work of the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros Saturday night, racing to a 102-77 victory at the SBCC Sports Pavilion. Terrell Handy-Johnson and Deondre Watson had 17 points apiece, Jacob Alonzo had 16 points and Malcolm Ruff had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Ventura (16-7, 4-0).

Late Surge Lifts Men's Basketball Past Oxnard

The VC men's basketball team used a 19-7 surge in the game's final five minutes to blow past visiting Oxnard College 89-74 Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. The Pirates' dynamic guard duo of Jacob Alonzo and Isiah Reyes led the way once again for Ventura (15-7, 3-0) with Alonzo totaling 19 points, four assists and four rebounds while Reyes turned in 18 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.Terrell Handy-Johnson scored 14 points with eight rebounds while Malcolm Ruff recorded 10 points and seven boards.

Sophomore Isiah Reyes had 23 points, including a coast-to-coast lay-up in the closing seconds of regulation time, to lead Ventura to a 97-93 overtime victory at Moorpark on Saturday.

Isiah Reyes scored a team-high 23 points, including a coact-to-coast drive for a lay-up in the final seconds of regulation time, as Ventura College's men's basketball team outlasted Moorpark in overtime, 97-93 Saturday at Raider Pavilion. Jacob Alonzo added 21 points, including five made 3-pointers, as the Pirates (14-7, 2-0) came back from a 20-point deficit midway through the first half to claim the victory. Malcolm Ruff had 13 points and 12 rebounds for VC.

Pirate freshman John Williams scored a game-high 24 points, 20 of them coming in the second half, as the Ventura College men's basketball team opened Western State Conference North Division play with a 77-67 victory over visiting Allan Hancock College Saturday at the Athletic Event Center. Williams also grabbed eight rebounds, and Jacob Alonzo had eight assists with eight boards. Isiah Reyes turned in 17 points for VC (13-7, 1-0) in the win.

Pirates Fall to Canyons in Non-Conference Finale

In their final outing before Western State Conference play begins, the Pirates' men's basketball team dropped a 91-85 decision to visiting College of the Canyons Thursday night at the Athletic Event Center. Isaac Ramirez scored 20 points on the nigt, making six 3-pointers, to lead the Pirates who came back from a 53-40 deficit at halftime to take a lead in the second half before ultimately falling to the Cougars.
