2019-20 VC Men's Basketball Review

The Pirates' men's basketball team's 3-4 start to the 2019-20 season was not what they envisioned, but as the saying goes, "It's not how you start, it's how you finish." Ventura won 13 of its final 15 games, including a 12-game winning streak to post the first undefeated Western State Conference North Division record in 12 years, as they captured their fifth straight conference crown. VC won the Antelope Valley College Tournament in early December and defeated eventual state elite eight qualifiers Riverside and Los Angeles Valley in posting an overall 21-8 mark in another successful season.

Pirate Season Ends in Heartbreak at Cerritos

The basketball gods can be cruel sometimes. That was certainly the case Friday night as the VC men's basketball team went on a roller coaster ride at Cerritos in the second round of the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs. The No. 9-seeded Pirates (21-8) went from 11 points ahead to two points down to overtime, to six points down to tied, ultimately ending in a last-second shot by the No. 8-seeded Falcons to defeat the Pirates, 77-75. Dayshone Henry paced Ventura with 31 points and nine rebounds while Tone Patton had a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards. Shulton Tobin totaled 13 points for VC in the season-ending setback.

Men's Basketball Has Perfect Ending to Regular Season

The VC men's basketball team had a perfect ending to the regular season in their 87-71 win over visiting Cuesta College ath the Athletic Event Center. Dayshone Henry had 17 points and nine rebounds while Timothy Turner totaled nine points, 10 rebounds and seven assists as the Pirates (21-7, 12-0) completed the first undefeated Western State Conference North Division campaign since the 2008 season. Thomas Dangerfield had 14 points and Dayveon Bates totaled 12 points as Ventura won for the 18th time in its last 21 games.

The Ventura College men's basketball team clinched outright the 2020 Western State Conference North Division championship with an 89-81 victory over Moorpark Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Timothy Turner had 24 points with eight rebounds and eight assists while Dashone Henry netted 22 points with eight boards. With the win, VC (19-7, 10-0) maintains a 3-game lead on second place Hancock with two games remaining on the schedule. Tone Patton had a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Men's Basketball Holds Off late Pierce Charge for Win

The Pirates' men's basketball team held off a late charge from Los Angeles Pierce College Saturday night, posting a 68-64 win over the Brahmas in Woodland Hills. Dayshone Henry had 23 points and nine rebounds for Ventura (18-7, 9-0), and Timothy Turner netted 18 points with eight boards and three assists. Shulton Tobin was the only other Pirate in double-figures with 11 points in the game.

Ventura Holds Off Hancock, Firmly in Control of WSC

The VC men's basketball team used a dominant first half to build a big lead against visiting Allan Hancock College and withstood a late Bulldog charge to post an 80-63 victory Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. Timothy Turner had 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists to lead Ventura (17-7, 8-0), who now holds a three-game lead i the Western State Conference North Division with four games remaining. Tone Patton had 16 points and 11 rebounds while Dayshone Henry posted 13 points and 13 boards in the win.

Pirates Overcome Halftime Deficit To Remain Perfect in WSC

The Ventura College men's basketball team trailed Santa Barbara 31-27 at halftime Saturday before exploding for 54 points in the second half, defeating the Vaqueros 81-54. Dayshone Henry scored 20 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor and a 4-4 performance from the foul stripe to lead Ventura (16-7, 7-0). Jermaine Jordan netted 14 with a game-high nine rebounds and Dayveon Bates had 12 for VC. Tone Patton added 10 points to the effort.

Men's Basketball Tops Century Mark in Victory

For the second time in five games, the Pirates' men's basketball team topped the century mark with their 102-69 victory over Oxnard Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center. Dayshone Henry led Ventura (14-7, 5-0) with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Shulton Tobin put up 20 points with five boards in the run-away win. Timothy Turner backed up the effort with 13 points and three dimes.Donavan Williams and Dayveon Bates totaled nine and eight points, respectively.

Another Strong Second Half Keeps Pirates Unbeaten in WSC

The Pirates' men's basketball team used another strong second half in their come-from-behind 97-91 victory at cross-county rival Moorpark College on Saturday afternoon. The win keeps VC (13-7, 4-0) unbeaten in Western State Conference North Division play. Donavan Williams led five Pirates in double figures with 28 points and Tone Patton netted 22, 18 coming in the final 20 minutes. Dayshone Henry netted 13 points in the game while Shulton Tobin and Timothy Turner each contributed 11 points.

Second Half Defense Leads VC to Victory

The Pirates' men's basketball team stepped up their defense in the second half on Wednesday night, outscoring Los Angeles Pierce 43-25 in the final 20 minutes of play in their 83-70 win over the Brahmas at the Athletic Event Center. Ventura held Pierce to 30 percent shooting from the floor (9-30) in the final frame and took advantage of 13 second half turnovers by the Brahmas. Timothy Turner had a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way and Donavan Williams also netted 20 points for the Pirates (12-7, 3-0).

Pirates Bring Home Big Road Win

The Pirates' men's basketball team traveled to Santa Maria Saturday to take on state No. 9 Allan Hancock and came away with a big 75-71 victory over the Bulldogs. Shulton Tobin was 6-7 from beyond the 3-point line for a game-high 22 points while Dayshone Henry scored 16 points with eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Tone Patton netted 13 points with seven boards and Timothy Turner was the four player in double figures for VC (11-7, 2-0) with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.

VC came back from a 26-point deficit with 14:45 remaining in the game. Henry played all 40 minutes for Ventura (9-6) totaling 22 points with 15 rebounds. Donavan Williams had 16 points while Tone Patton had a double-double of 10 points and 12 boards. Jonathan Montesinos had 12 points in the win.

The VC men's basketball dug a big hole for themselves Saturday afternoon against Fresno City College, and nearly climbed out on the final day of the Wyndham/Mannon Classic at College of the Sequoias in Visalia. VC trailed 62-22 after a difficult first half before outscoring the Rams 52-21 in the final 20 minutes in the 83-74 loss. Dayshone Henry recorded a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds while Timothy Turner had 17 points for Ventura (8-6). Tone Patton netted nine points with 11 boards.

Dayshone Henry led the way with another big performance taking just 26 field goal attempts to score 34 points with 14 rebounds. Timothy Turner netted 19 points with five assists and Donavan Williams had 16 points, five boards. four dimes and four steals. Shulton Tobin handed out five assists and Tone Patton pulled in seven rebounds for Ventura (8-4).

Donavan Williams led Ventura (4-4) with 19 points, including four made three's, and Dayveon Bates netted 15 points with six rebounds in the Pirate victory. VC was 14-32 from behind the 3-point arc (45%) while shooting 52 percent overall from the floor (27-52). Shulton Tobin had 13 points, all coming in the final 4:34 of the first half.

The Pirates trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half before cutting the deficit to one point in the final two minutes of play.
