Pirates Third at WSC Golf Championships

The Ventura College golf team placed third overall at the 36-hole Western State Conference Championships Monday at Bakersfield's Sundale Country Club. Freddie Carcamo led the Pirate effort with a 73-71, 144 to place in a tie for sixth place individually while Matthew Jones carded a 70-77, 147 to place 11th. Nathan Schultz shot a 72-76, 148 to finish in a tie for 12th. Both Carcamo and Jones earned All-WSC honors for their performance throughout the season on the links.

Santa Barbara pulled the upset and won the day with a 281-285, 566, while overall WSC champion Canyons carded a team score of 286-282, 568 to come in second on the day. Glendale was fourth with a 294-296, 590.

Other VC golfers included Donovan Chappell (72-78, 150), Stephen Ong (78-73, 151) and Caden Raines (75-77, 152).

Play included two 18-hole rounds and each counted as separate contests counting toward the overall conference standings.

In the morning, Santa Barbara came in first with a 7-under par 281 while COC finished a 2-under 286. VC was third with an overall 2-over score of 290, followed by Glendale at 294.

Jones fired a 2-under 70 to finish in fourth place while Chappell carded an even-par 72 to tie for ninth. Carcamo shot a 1-over 73 to tie for 14th overall.

Canyons came back to capture the afternoon round with a 6-under 282 followed by SBCC at 285. Ventura was third again at 293.

Carcamo's 1-under 71 tied for fourth place overall and Schultz had an even-par 72 to place in a tie for seventh. Ong tied for 10th with a 1-over 73.

The Pirates finished the conference race with a 44-26 record to place third behind overall champion Canyons and runner-up Santa Barbara. This still qualifies VC to compete in the 3C2A Southern California Regionals as a team on Monday May 4. Play will begin at 7:00 am at Ventura's Olivas Links Golf Course.
