Emery, Matias & Abreu Earn ITA All-American Awards
Cody Ray Emery, Rafael Matias and Lucas Abreu all earned 3C2A All-American Awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their play during the 2024 season. Emery was also named the ITA Juco West Region Sophomore Player of the Year. Emery and Abreau, along with Matias and Julian Tellez were named ITA 3C2A All-Americans in doubles.

Cody Ray Emery, Rafael Matias and Lucas Abreu all earned 3C2A All-American Awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their play during the 2024 season. Emery was also named the ITA Juco West Region Sophomore Player of the Year. Emery and Abreu, along with Matias and Julian Tellez were named ITA 3C2A All-Americans in doubles.
Emery, a Ventura High School graduate and son of VC head coach Nelson Emery, battled through injuries during the season, but when it counted the most, he played spectacularly. He was 8-2 in singles play in the Western State Conference Championships and in the 3C2A State Singles Tournament at The Ojai. He was the conference runner-up and advanced to the semifinals at state, dropping both matches to the top-ranked JC player in California. Emery earned the No. 2 final ranking in the state. He was also named the Co-Player of the Year for the WSC.
Matias, a native of Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil, was 17-10 overall in 2024, including a 13-8 mark in team duals. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the WSC Tournament and made it to the Round of 16 at The Ojai, finishing the year with the No. 6 ranking in the state.
Abreu, the Pirates No. 3 singles player, was 17-8 on the season overall, 12-5 in dual matches. The Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil product also qualified for The Ojai, moving forward to the Round of 16 before having his season come to an end with the No. 9 state ranking.
In doubles play, Emery and Abreu earned All-American status with a 7-1 run in the post season, claiming the WSC championship and advancing to the quarterfinals of The Ojai. They finished the season with a 13-2 record and the No. 3 ranking in California.
Tellez, who came to VC from Winnetka, CA, and Matias earned the No. 5 ranking in the state following their run to the 3C2A State Final Four. They produced a 9-4 record overall.
In addition to completing the Pirates' 20th WSC championship in 26 years under head coach Nelson Emery, the Pirates posted an overall record of 18-6, including a 17-1 mark against community college teams en route to the 2024 3C2A State Team Championship, Ventura's third under Coach Emery. Additionally, VC won the Gorham Cup as the outstanding community college team at The Ojai Tournament.
