VC Drops Close Match at Occidental

The Pirates' men's tennis team won the doubles point Saturday at NCAA Div. III Occidental but could not hold on in singles play, falling to the Tigers 4-3. Victor Peyrebonne and Shingo Ono were both double winners for the Pirates, claiming victory in doubles and singles play.

Ono and Manolo Vanbesien claimed the first win of the day for Ventura (3-2) in No. 3 doubles, prevailing 6-1. Yusen Sato and Victor Peyrebonne followed with a 6-2 triumph in No. 2 doubles to clinch the point for the Pirates. Yanis Guerrout and Ariitea Cotti-Helme nearly completed the sweep, falling 7-6 to the Tigers in No. 1 doubles.

Peyrebonne won in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, while Ono claimed a three-set thriller in the No. 5 match, 3-6, 7-6, 10-4.  Unfortunately, the Pirates could not find another victory in singles play as Occidental won four of the six contests to claim the 4-3 win.

Ventura is next scheduled to host Santa Barbara on Tuesday Feb. 17 to open Western State Conference play.
