VC Splits Pair in Division III Matches

The Ventura College men's tennis team continues their tour of the SCIAC Saturday, splitting a pair of matches against two NCAA Division III schools. The Pirates bested UC Santa Cruz 6-1 before being swept by Claremont College in the nightcap. Yanis Guerrout was one of four double-winners for the Pirates against the Banana Slugs, along with Yusen Sato, Ariitea Cotti-Helme and Victor Peyrebonne.

In the opener, Ventura won two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. Guerrout and Cotti-Helme prevailed in the No. 2 match 6-1 and Sato and Peyrebonne won on Court 3 by the same 6-1 score.

Sato won his No. 2 singles match 6-3, 7-6 (3) while Peyrebonne claimed the No. 3 slot, 7-5, 6-3. Abladj Mondroha posted a 6-0, 6-4 win on Court 4 and Guerrout won in the No. 5 match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Cotti-Helme finished of fthe victory with a love and two win on Court 6.

In the nightcap, the Pirates were unable to take a match from the Stags, the No. 4-ranked team in NCAA Division III. Guerrout and Cotti-Helme pushed Claremont's No. 1 doubles team, falling 7-6. Caua Coimbra held fast at No. 1 singles before dropping a 7-6, 6-2 decision and Cotti-Helme fell in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4.

The Pirates will continue playing four-year schools in the coming week, hosting William Jessup on Wednesday Mar. 4 before traveling to Hope International on Friday Mar. 6.
