Ventura's No. 1 doubles team of Caua Coimbra and Abladj Mondroha claimed the runner-up spot in the 3C2A State Championships Sunday at The Ojai Tournament. The pair won their semifinal match in the morning before falling in a close battle in the championship match in the afternoon at Libby Park in Ojai.
The Pirate duo captured their semifinal match in the morning against the No. 1 pair from San Diego City. Coimbra and Mondroha had lost to their opponents in VC's first round team playoff match on Apr. 7, but turned the tables Sunday. VC won the first set 6-3 before falling in the second 6-2. Ventura trailed late in the super tiebreaker before coming back to advance 11-9.
In the state championship match, Coimbra and Mondroha faced off against Irvine Valley's No. 3 pair. VC led 4-1 in each of the first two sets, only to see the Lasers' pair come back to win five straight games in each to win the title 6-4, 6-4.
Despite the loss, Coimbra and Mondroha, both freshmen, add to the storied history of Ventura College men's tennis at The Ojai. They match Jinsei Tajima and Philemon Jabin, who were state runners-up in 2023, and are the second VC duo to reach the 3C2A State Finals in doubles since Tom Douglas and Hans Baumstark claimed gold in 2013.
