Baylany Magana turned in a dominant two-way performance to lead the VC softball team to a 7–0 shutout win over Imperial Valley on Tuesday at Los Angeles Valley. The Pirates broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning and backed Magana's one-hit complete game with 10 hits and steady pressure on the bases. The sophomore had three hits and scored a run offensively while striking out seven Desert Warriors from the circle.
After two scoreless innings, Ventura broke through in the top of the third, plating two runs to seize a 2–0 lead and set the tone. The Pirates continued to add on in the middle and late innings, scoring three times in the fifth and two more in the seventh to steadily pull away. Imperial Valley was limited to just one hit and three baserunners beyond walks, while three defensive errors opened the door for VC's offense to capitalize.
Magana controlled the game from the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing only one hit with two walks and seven strikeouts. The right-hander did not allow an earned run and worked out of traffic when needed, stranding five IVC runners. She also contributed at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 and swiping a base as Ventura out-hit Imperial Valley 10–1.
VC's offense spread the production throughout the lineup, with several players delivering key at-bats in scoring situations. Erika Sanchez sparked the Pirates' attack, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored to help ignite the third- and fifth-inning rallies. In the middle of the order, Sophia Valencia provided extra-base power, collecting two hits including a double and scoring once as Ventura steadily extended its advantage.
Run production came from multiple sources as the Pirates built their lead. Paisley Magdaleno, Abby Ibarra and Isabella Padilla each drove in a run, helping Ventura cash in on opportunities created by walks, hits and Desert Warrior miscues. Magdaleno showed her versatility by reaching base, recording an RBI and adding a stolen base, while Padilla finished with a hit and an RBI to cap a balanced offensive day. VC also showed its aggressiveness on the bases with two stolen bags, from Magana and Magdaleno, applying additional pressure on the Imperial Valley defense.
In the second game of the day, Ventura trailed host LA Valley 7-4 in the bottom of the third inning when inclement weather halted play. That game will be resumed at a later date.
The Pirates next travel to Victorville on Friday Feb. 20 to battle Victor Valley in a double-header.
