Pirates Set School Record at WSC Relays

A Ventura College track and field record highlighted the day as the Pirate track and field team hosted the Western State Conference Relays. All eleven conference school participated in the annual affair which provides for an early season test for all participants. VC's performance was topped by men's sprint relay team of Christopher Williams, Leo Ramirez, Aaron Guidry and Tristan Griffith with their record time of 1:34.42, breaking the previous record of 1:34.75 in 2010.

For the women's track and field team, Freshman Tiara Litonjua ran her first 400 meter hurdle of the season coming in first place, but produced the sixth fastest time in Pirate history. Litonjua placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles on the day.

Ventura received strong performances from Alisha Greenlaw who placed second in the 100 meter hurdles and in the triple jump. With Justin Coert coming in second in the men's discus throw. They rounded out the Pirates earning second place finishes.

Several, Ventura College athletes and relay teams produced top three finishes. The men's 4x100 meter relay team. Greenlaw was able to bring home third in the long jump. The Pirates women's sprint relay team, as well. Isabella Ironhill and Marissa Tobin earned a third place tie in the pole vault. Dejahnae Brown earned a third place finish in the high jump and finally Alyssa Carrillo was the third place finisher in both the women's hammer throw and the discus.

"We had some strong performaces today," commented head coach Tony Veney. "This meet gave everyone a chance to compete in their primary events while testing themselves in new competiong." The first major test of the season now looms on the horizon as the Pirates track team will host the WSC South six-way team battle scheduled for Friday, Feb. 26 at the Ventura College Sporsplex. Field Events begin at 1:00 pm and the running events will get underway at 2:00 pm.
