Adan Cruz and Kimora Pooler punched their tickets to the state championships with top 3 finishes at the Southern California Regionals hosted by Riverside City College Saturday. Pooler claimed second place in the shot put finals to earn her way to state while Cruz claimed the bronze in the 10,000m run. Brieanna Tafoya moved past her preliminary round in the 800 meters on Saturday, as well,and ahost of other Pirates are scheduled to compete in Regioinal Championships on Saturday May 11 back in Riverside.
The Pirates' men's and women's track and field teams traveled the 101 freeway Friday to compete in the Western State Conference Coast Meet at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. Five Pirate individuals and one relay highlighted the day as Brieanna Tafoya, Olivia Burton, Cynthia Tuzak, Reuben Jacob, and David Lopez all took home individual first place honors. The men's 4x400 relay team of Isaiah Batis, Lopez, Jason Mesa, and Darren Houston took their third win of the season. Both teams finished third in the six-team competition.
Battling high winds and competition from three conference schools and a handful of unattached athletes, the Pirates' men's and women's track and field teams claimed six gold medals at the Moorpark Open on Friday. Adan Cruz and Isaiah Batis each claimed individual track wins for the men and Jacob Guzman won the discus throw. For the women, Cynthia Tuzak won the discus while Lilly Christenson and Kimora Pooler won the long jump and shot put events, respectively. VC's 4x400m relay team also claimed a first place finish.
The Ventura College women's track and field team took first of six teams and the men were third at the Western State Conference North meet hosted at the VC Sportsplex Friday. Pirate winners for the day were highlighted by the triple gold turned in by David Lopez who pulled off the 100 and 200 meter double, and he stormed from behind to victory on the anchor leg the 4x100 meter relay. Other winners included Kimora Pooler in the shot put, CeCe Tuzak in the discus, and Olivia Burton in the 3000 meters.
The Ventura College men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2019 seasons Friday at Bakersfield College in the annual Battle of the regions. After a disastrous beginning when two of the three men's 4x100 meter relay teams were disqualified for lane violations, the Pirates rebooted their efforts and 12 individuals and two relays met the minimum qualifying standards for the SoCal Championships on May 3. David Lopez and Cynthia Tuzack were individual Pirate double winners.
