Late goal propels Pirates to win at Cerritos

After battling for 82 minutes with no score to show for it, the Pirates' women's soccer team punched through a goal off a corner kick to claim a 1-0 victory at Cerritos Tuesday. Sofie Stock found Cristal Vargas' corner kick and placed it inside the net in traffic to secure the game's lone goal and secure Ventura's second straight win. Janessah Gonzalez had nine saves in the shuout win while defenders Alondra Sanchez and Tanaya Moreno also had solid outings.

Janessah Gonzalez had nine saves in the shutout win while defenders Alondra Sanchez and Tanaya Moreno also had solid outings.

In a slow first 45 minutes, the Pirates totaled seven shots with Jazzy Moreno hitting four of them, two on goal. Gonzalez recorded a pair of saves before intermission.

The teams battled well into the second half before VC claimed the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute.

Ventura next hosts Bakersfield on Friday Sept. 19 at 5:30 pm.
