Pirate Soccer defeats Moorpark in WSC opener
The VC women's soccer team opened Western State Conference play Friday with a 3-2 win at Moorpark. After a scoreless first half, Jazzy Moreno, Jennifer Ramirez and Yarabi Herrera all scored for Ventura (4-4-2, 1-0) before the Raiders countered with a pair of scores to make things interesting down the stretch.

The VC women's soccer team opened Western State Conference play Friday with a 3-2 win at Moorpark. After a scoreless first half, Jazzy Moreno, Jennifer Ramirez and Yaraby Herrera all scored for Ventura (4-4-2, 1-0) before the Raiders countered with a pair of scores to make things interesting down the stretch.
The Pirates had nine shots in the opening 45 minutes, with three on goal. Meanwhile, MC also totaled nine shots with five on target.
Moreno got the Pirates on the board quickly after halftime, scoring an unassisted goal in the 46th minute. Ramirez followed in the 54th minute with a goal from 25-yards out that the goal keeper lost in the sun. Herrera made it 3-0 for VC in the 59th minute with an assist from Klarissa Melgoza.
Moorpark scored goals in the 70th and 85th minutes to pull within one goal, but Ventura's defense, anchored by goal keeper Janessah Gonzalez, held fast and preserved the win.
For the game, VC had 12 shots with seven on goal while the Raiders also produced 12 attempts with five on frame.
Ventura next hosts Cuesta on Friday Oct. 3 at 5:30 pm at the Sportsplex.
