Pirate Women Continue Play at WSC Championships

The Ventura College women's tennis team fared well on the first day of the Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships Friday. They had four players advance to the round of 16 in single splay at Ventura's Camino Real Park while two doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals. No. 11-seed Allie De Marco did not drop a game in her love and love win in singles while No. 5-seed De Marco and Alyssa Powell had a strong opener to move into the quarters in doubles.

No. 7-seed Lea Meschke advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over a player from College of the Canyons and No. 9-seed Powell moved to the round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over an opponent from Victor Valley. De Marco claimed her love and love triumph over an opponent from College of the Canyons. Meanwhile No. 16-seed Jule Lauinger won two singles matches Friday, an 8-1 victory over an opponent from Santa Monica, then a 6-3, 6-2 win over a foe from College of the Canyons.

Tricia McClain won her round of 64 singles match against a player from Antelope Valley, 8-1, before falling in the next round to an opponent from Glendale, 6-3, 6-3. Keressa Garland, Chelsea Carmichael and Leila Esmaili all were defeated in their first round match-ups in singles play.

In doubles play, De Marco and Powell defeated their opponent from College of the Canyons to move into the quarterfinals, 8-2, while No. 7-seed Meschke and Lauinger defeated an opponent from Santa Barbara, 8-4. Garland and McClain won their first match against a team from Santa Monica, 8-0, before they were bounced into the back draw by the No. 6-seed from Santa Barbara. Carmichael and Esmaili lost their first round match-up against a pair from Bakersfield.

Play will continue in the WSC Championships on Saturday April 7 at the VC Tennis Center. The tournament will conclude on Friday April 13.
