Pirate Women Compete on Opening Day of WSC Tourney
The VC women's tennis team has five players still alive for state tournament berths after first and second round play in singles competition at the Western State Conference Championships Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. Chandra Padua, Dulce Contreras, Isabella DeRosa and Ella Morgan were all winners in the opening round before falling to the back draw in the Round of 32. Kira Branson received a first round bye in the draw and her second round match was suspended Tuesday due to weather.

Padua had the easiest victory in the Round of 64, defeating her opponent from Canyons 8-0 before falling to a player from Santa Monica 6-4, 7-5 in her second contest.
Contreras defeated a player from Los Angeles Mission 8-3 before dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision in the second round against Canyons.
Meanwhile, Morgan and DeRosa each prevailed by 8-6 margins in their openers against players from Bakersfield and Antelope Valley, respectively. DeRosa fell to LA Mission, 6-0, 6-3 and Morgan dropped a match-up with an opponent from Bakersfield 6-4, 6-0 in second round matches.
The Pirates' Sherry Bonilla fell in her opener 8-4 against an opponent from Bakersfield.
VC's No. 1 player Branson received a first-round bye, and was taking on an opponent from Santa Monica when play was stopped late Tuesday.
Singles play in the WSC championships will resume at 10:30 am on Thursday Apr. 2 at the VC Tennis Center while doubles play will begin in the afternoon.
