Veloz, Lyans Headline Pirate All-WSC Honorees

Sophomore outside hitter/opposite Sarah Veloz earned first-team All-Western State Conference honors and VC head coach Brad Lyans was named the WSC North Division Coach of the Year by a vote of conference coaches last month. Veloz leads five Pirate players who garnered All-WSC awards for the 2014 season.

Sophomores Mehgan Lambert (4) and Makeda Pelle (5) each had five kills in VC's playoff loss at Grossmont Tuesday night in El Cajon.  It was VC's first post-season appearance in seven seasons.

The fact that the No. 15-seed Pirate volleyball team fell in three sets, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17, at No,. 2 Grossmont Tuesday night in the CCCAA SoCal regional Playoffs cannot dull the brightness of the season just completed. VC (12-11) made its first playoff appearance in seven years in El Cajon, in a breif but memorable match.

Mark Twain once wrote, "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." And so it is with the Ventura College volleyball team in 2014. On the strength of big wins over Santa Monica and Pierce, the Pirates were selected as the No. 15-seed in the CCCAA Regional Playoffs Sunday, ending a seven-year post-season drought for the program.

Sophomores Stand Out in Volleyball Season Finale

The season of redemption came to a close Wednesday night on a high note for the Ventura College women's volleyball team. VC (12-10, 6-6) defeated Los Angeles Mission in San Fernando 25-21, 25-16, 27-25 post the Pirates' best season since 2007 when they finished 12-9.

Volleyball Drops Match at Moorpark in Three Sets

The Pirate volleyball team began its season-ending three-match road swing with a three-set loss at Moorpark College Friday night. The Raiders bested the Pirates 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 at Raider Pavilion.

Pirate Volleyball Sweeps Hancock on Sophomore Night

On a night when the Pirate volleyball team honored their graduating sophomores, the Pirates' season of redemption continued. Led by sophomores Kirra Drury, Mehgan Lambert, Sarah Veloz, Makeda Pelle, VC assured itself of its first .500 season in seven years with its 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 sweep of the visiting Allan Hancock Bulldogs.

Pirates Drop Tough Battle at Pierce

Taking the battle the full five sets, the Pirate volleyball team could not maintain its early advantage, falling 3-2 in Woodland Hills to Pierce College Friday evening. VC took the first two sets but the Brahmas battled back to take the final three and the match.

Freshman Cassandra Lacanilao had 11 digs in Ventura's 25-23, 25-19, 25-14 win over Cuesta Wednesday at the VC Athletic Event Center.
Spikers Strong in Home Sweep of Cuesta

On the verge of their first winning season in seven years, the Ventura College volleyball team began the final round of conference play with a strong three-set win over visiting Cuesta College Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Mehgan Lambert led the effort with 10 kills and 11 digs for the Pirates (10-7, 4-3).

Spikers Back on Winning Track

In an evenly matched contest, the Pirate volleyball team came out with a 3-1 decision over Los Angeles Mission College Friday at the Athletic Event Center. VC (9-7, 3-3) defeated the Eagles 25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22 to snap a two-match losing streak.

Volleyball Swept by Santa Barbara

Ventura's hangover from their first state ranking in seven years continued Friday as the No. 25-ranked Pirates were swept by No. 8 Santa Barbara 25-11, 25-14, 25-20 at the Athletic Event Center.

Spikers Unable to Continue Momentum

Entering the state top-25 for the first time since 2007, the Ventura College volleyball team was unable to continue the momentum of last week's victories in their 25-21, 26-24, 25-27, 25-6 loss to Moorpark Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. Sarah Veloz led VC (8-6, 2-2) with 12 kills on the night.

VC Volleyball Sweeps at Hancock

Behind 14 kills from Makeda Pelle, the Pirate volleyball team easily swept Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria Friday evening, 25-20, 25-15, 25-8. Tori Hiott contributed nine kills, 10 digs and four aces to the victory for Ventura (8-5, 2-1).

The season of redemption continued for the Ventura College volleyball team Wednesday night as the Pirates found a signature win in their sweep of SoCal No. 10 Pierce College, 27-25, 25-22, 25-19 at the Athletic Event Center. Sarah Veloz had 11 kills and Shelby Stanger had 24 assists and three service aces to lead the way for VC (7-5, 1-1).

Volleyball Drops Conference Opener in Four Sets

Following the long drive to San Luis Obispo, the Pirate volleyball team dropped its Western State Conference North Division opener at Cuesta College in four sets Friday night. Sarah Veloz led VC with 15 kills.

Pirates Top Owls in Five Sets

After dropping the first set, the Pirate volleyball team bounced back to take the next two, ultimately defeating Citrus College in the full five sets on the road in Glendora. Cassadnra Lacanilao and 23 digs and Mehgan Lambert recorded 19 kills to lead Ventura (6-4) in their final non-conference tune-up.
