Coming off two consecutive Top-10 finishes at the CCCAA State Championships, the Pirates' women's cross country team came into the 2019 looking to build on that success. Meanwhile the VC men were looking for a return to the state, their final destination in 2017. It was another competitive, interesting and fun season for the Ventura College cross country teams.
The Pirates' men's and women's cross country teams competed primarily against runners from four-year schools on Saturday at the Biola Invitational in Fullerton's Ted Craig Regional Park. The Pirate women were the top-finishing community college team, placing 15th of the 22 competing teams while the VC men came in 18th place overall. Olivia Burton continued to pace the women and Luis Duran moved up to lead VC's men's team in the race.
The Ventura College women's cross country team brought home the big prize Friday, capturing first place at the Ventura Invitational at Arroyo Verde Park. Olivia Burton won the event for the second year in a row, pacing five VC finishers in the top eight spots. The Pirate men, meanwhile, running shorthanded for the second week in a row, came in sixth of eight teams in the men's competition.
Ventura College's men's and women's cross country teams opened the Pirates' 2019-20 athletic year Friday at the Oxnard Invitational. Running on a flat course that was hardened by high morning winds, the women got off to a solid start finishing second in the team competition while the Ventura men came in fifth. Olivia Burton and Brieanna Tafoya led the women, each placing in the top-10 while Nick Villela paced the VC men.
