Pirates Make Easy Work of Vaqueros

The VC men's basketball team made easy work of Santa Barbara City College Saturday, defeating the Vaqueros 91-51 at the Athletic Event Center. The state No. 12-ranked Pirates raced out to a 21-5 lead in the game's first six minutes and never looked back in the victory. Adrian McIntyre netted a game-best 22 points, 18 in the first half, and brother Anthony McIntyre had 19, 15 in the opening 20 minutes. Anthony Garza scored 10 points with nine rebounds while Shulton Tobin netted eight with nine boards for VC (17-2, 5-0).

Tobin found Adrian Mc. all alone under the basket on the first possession of the game for a two, and Anthony Mc. nailed a step-back three on the second trip down the floor for a quick 5-0 lead. Anthony Mc. followed a SBCC 3-pointer with an old-fashioned 3-point play, and Tobin and Aaron Dawoodjee each added a free throw to expand the lead to seven, 10-3. Adrian Mc. had a steal and lay-up, then Anthony Mc. scored on another drive to the hoop. After a bucket from the Vaqueros, Garza found Dawoodjee in the left corner for three, then Adrian Mc. used a little shake-n-bake from the right win to score on another drive to the rim. Adrian Mc. completed the early run with a give-and-go to Garza-back to Adrian Mc. for another score at the rim and the 21-5 margin with 14:11 remaining in the half.

VC continued their strong play behind the McIntyre brothers, taking a 49-28 lead into halftime.  The Pirates outshot the Vaqueros in the first half 59 percent (16-27) to 33 percent (10-30) and also dominated the glass, 24-12. 

The Pirates continued their roll in the final 20 minutes with 10 different players finding the scoring column. Ventura connected on 18 of 30 shots from the floor in the period (60 percent) and outscored the Vaqueros 42-23 to post the 40-point win.

Jelani Bell came off the bench for eight points in the contest and Tobin handed out five assists. Garza dropped three dimes and Anthony Mc., Adrian Mc., and Michael Noulowe all grabbed a pair of steals. Anthony Mc. and Caleb Geisendorfer each added six rebounds to the effort.

VC next hosts Moorpark in a make-up game on Monday Jan. 31. Tip-off is set for 5:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center.
