Bakersfield took control of the game early with a 13-3 run, holding an 18-8 advantage. Cigar ended the skid with a 3-point play at the 12:08 mark before BC answered with a deuce and a three to extend their lead. Tong Tong made a lay-up with 8:42 remaining in the half to keep the margin at eight, 28-20, and Smith's jumper with 5:24 on the clock kept the deficit steady, 36-28. Bakersfield scored the next six points, however, and led at halftime 54-40.
Smith hit from range at the 18:39 mark of the second half to begin an 11-0 Pirate run, followed by a bucket from Cigar off of Smith's assist. Baron Bellamy then cashed in a Wigington dime and Smith made one of two free throws. Wigington closed the run with a triple and Ventura had fought back to a three-point deficit, 57-54, with 17:22 on the clock.
Although Bakersfield answered and reestablished a 10-point cushion, 64-54, the momentum was clearly on the Pirates' side. Smith scored a dunk and a lay-up to pull VC to within 72-70, and Dabe Princewill finished the comeback with a basket with 8:26 left in regulation time. Wigington hit from range to put Ventura ahead, and the teams battled it out down the stretch. Bellamy hit a pair of charity tosses with 1:12 left to give VC an 87-85 edge, but the Renegades managed to tie the score on the next trip down the floor to send the game to extra time.
In the overtime, Smith hit a lay-up and a free throw. Then Wigington made a lay-up off a feed from Cigar for a five point edge. Princewill hit a key three in OT and Cigar's charity shot set the final 96-93 margin.
The Pirates (9-3) next play at Compton on Wednesday Dec. 17.
