Ventura Pulls Away From Moorpark in Second Half for Win
The VC men's basketball team pulled away from visiting Moorpark in the second half to post an 84-72 victory over the Raiders Saturday at the Athletic Event Center. Kam'Ron Cigar led the way for VC (15-3, 2-0) with 21 points while Snookey Wigington netted 15 points while handing out nine assists. Jerimiyah Smith posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds and Baron Bellamy recorded 12 points in the triumph.

Moorpark took an 11-9 advantage with 14:33 remaining in the first half before an8-0 Ventura run turned the tables. Cigar hit a jumper, then made a 3-pointer and was fouled, completing a 4-point play. He then cashed in a Wigington assist for a 17-11 VC lead at the 11:56 mark.
While the Raiders would advance on the Pirates several times for the rest of the period, VC always had a big shot to hold Moorpark back. Cigar had a big triple with 9:14 on the clock for a 5-point edge and Wigington's jumper maintained the advantage a minute later. Wigington scored another deuce at the 6:39 mark for a 26-20 lead and Smith's dunk with 5:23 on the clock also held off MC. Ventura held a slim 36-35 lead at halftime.
The Raiders briefly took the lead early in the second half, holding a 44-41 advantage with 14:04 left to play. A pair of dunks by Kevin Anigbogu gave the Pirates the lead for good, and Cigar's jumper at the 14:50 mark gave VC a 47-44 margin. Bellamy followed with a lay-up and Jeremiah Wilson's three answered a Raider score. Wigington's make from range extended the lead to 55-47 with 12:34 remaining the the Pirates never looked back.
MC pulled back to within five, 55-50, before two free throws by Wilson, a Bellamy lay-up and a jumper by Smith moved the advantage to double-figures, 61-50. The Pirates weren't threatened the rest of the way in the 12-point victory.
Ventura next heads to Santa Barbara on Wednesday Jan. 14. The game against the Vaqueros begins at 5:00 pm at Robertson Gym on the campus of UC Santa Barbara.
