Joey Herrera shot an even par round of 72, tied for fifth place individually, as the Pirate golf team carded a season-best 387 Monday to take second place at the Western State Conference event hosted by Citrus College at San Dimas Country Club. College of the Canyons ran away with the meet with a team score of 352, followed by VC (287) and Santa Barbara (388). The Pirates and Vaqueros are now tied for second place in the standings heading into the WSC Championships next week.
Playing in a State Championships preview at Sandpiper Golf Club in Goleta, the Pirate golf team carded a team score of 396 to place ninth of the 12 participating teams at the Sandpiper Invitational on Monday. Sophomore Joey Herrera posted an even-par 72 to place fifth in the tournament individually to lead the Pirates. Cypress won the team event with a 371 followed by Riverside (378) and Monterey Peninsula (378).
The Pirates' golf team finished in the middle of the pack Monday at the Western State Conference event at Santa Maria Country Club hosted by Allan Hancock College. Ventura carded a team mark of 397, one stroke behind Santa Barbara for fifth place in the nine-team event. Canyons came in first with a 366 followed by Hancock (380), Glendale (386) and SBCC. Jonathan Ortiz and Denis Kakimoto each shot a 5-over 77 to lead the Pirates.
VC sophomore Denis Kakimoto tied for third place with a 1-over 73 Monday at the Western State Conference Victor Valley event at Spring Valley Lake Country Club in Victorville. As a team, Ventura carded a 397 to come in fourth place, behind Canyons (368), Santa Barbara (384) and Glendale (391).
VC sophomore Joey Herrera continued his strong play Monday, posting his third sub-par round in his past four outings. His 2-under par 69 won him medalist honors for the fourth time this year, and the Pirates came in second as a team at the Western State Conference event hosted by Glendale College at Oakmont Country Club. Herrera went low by five strokes over second place and Denis Kakimoto was tied for fifth with a 77.

Ventura posted a team score of 381, their second-best team score of the year, to finish behind Santa Barbara (369) and Canyons (376).

The Ventura College golf team traveled to the Inland Empire Wednesday to play in the Mt. San Jacinto Invitational hosted on the championship course at Tukwet Canyon Golf Clubin Riverside. The long van ride took its toll on the Pirates as they posted a team score of 406, placing them 12th in the 16-team field. Joey Herrera was the lone VC golfer in the 70's with a 5-over 77 on the day.
The Pirates' men's gold team took third place Monday at the Western State Conference event hosted by Bakersfield College. Ventura posted a team score of 392, which tied the Pirates with Santa Barbara. The Vaqueros broke the tie with a better score for the sixth golfer, however, and VC ended in third place. Joey Herrera and Alex Millet each posted 4-over scores of 76 at the Rio Bravo Country Club to lead the way for the Pirates.
Joey Herrera started where he left off. The VC sophomore golfer finished in the individual runner-yup spot at the CCCAA State Championships a year ago, and Sunday and Monday he fired a 1-over 73-72--145 to claim medalist honors at the season-opening Pt. Conception Open at the La Purisma Golf Club in Lompoc. As a team, Ventura came in third place in the 14-team field with a 401-380--781, behind Canyons (768) and Cypress (772), and ahead fo Desert (784) and Santa Barbara (785).
