Ventura sophomore AJ Ryland tied for second place with a 1-over 73 on Monday to help lead the Pirate golf team to a fourth place finish at the State Preview meet at Sandpiper Gold Course in Santa Barbara. The Pirates totaled a team score of 391 to finish six strokes off the pace set by Orange Coast.
The Ventura College golf team traveled to Rio Bravo Country Club in Bakersfield Monday to simultaneously compete in the Western State Conference No. 4 event and the Southern California Preview. The Pirates' team score of 403 placed them sixth in the conference field and ninth in the wide regional competition. AJ Ryland was the low man for Ventura with a 6-over 78, good for a tie for 14th in the WSC event and tied for 27th in the SoCal group.
The Pirates returned to Western State Conference play Monday with a team score of 383 at the Santa Maria Country Club, placing third of the eight conference teams. Logan Gonzalez paced Ventura with a 1-over 73, good for fourth place overall while AJ Ryland was sixth with a 3-over 75. Ian Chapital showed a lot of patience carding a 2-under on the back nine after posting a 7-over going out. His 77 tied for 12th on the day along with teammate Logan Cook who was also 5-over.
The Pirate golf team won the highly-contested Riverside Invitational Monday at the par-72 Victoria Club. VC posted a team score of 390 to win by one stroke over runner-up Santa Barbara. A total of seven strokes separated the top five teams in the event. AJ Ryland led Ventura with an even par 72 to tie for medalist honors and Hunter McCoy turned in a 6-over 78.
The Pirates' men's golf team opened Western State Conference play on Monday, hosting the other seven league teams at River Ridge's Victoria Lakes Golf Course in Oxnard. VC carded a team score of 394 to place a close sixth of the eight-team field, just four strokes from fourth. AJ Ryland and Logan Cook led Ventura, each with a 4-over 76 while Daniel Darwin carded a 78.
The Pirate golf team opened their 2024 season with a solid showing at the Pt. Conception Invitational at La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc Sunday and Monday. Sophomore AJ Ryland led the Pirates with a two day performance of 80/84, 164, which tied for 20th overall out of 86 individual competitors. Daniel Darwin turned in an 84/82, 166. The Pirates totaled a team score of 410/428, 838 to finish seventh of the 14 competing teams.
