Pirate Golf Third at WSC Championships, Finish 2nd on Season

The VC golf team posted a team score of 372-363, 735 Monday at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano to place third overall in the 36-hole Western State Conference Championships. Brandon Flores shot a 73-69, 142 to finish two under par on the day to lead Ventura while Ian Chapital shot 73-71, for an even par 144. Including the two rounds, the Pirates finished second in the conference standings, advancing to the 3C2A Southern California Regionals on Monday May 5.

The Pirates finished second in the morning round with a team score of 372, behind Canyons at 361 and ahead of Santa Barbara at 374. Logan Gonzalez tied for second in the round with an even-par 72 while Flores and Ian Chapital each carded a 1-over 73 to tie for seventh. Nick Bublitz turned in a 3-over 75 in a tie for 14th.

In the afternoon, Ventura posted its best team score of the season, 363, but finished third, four strokes behind Canyons and Santa Barbara. COC won the round on a tiebreaker. Flores tied for medalist honors with a 3-under 69 and Chapital was tied for sixth with a 1-under 71. Gonzalez and Bublitz each tied for 11th, carding 2-over 74's and Matthew Fisher tied for 15th with a 75.

Overall, COC claimed victory with a 361-359, 720, Santa Barbara was second at 374-359, 733 and the Pirates were a close third at 372-363, 735. Flores was VC's low man on the day with a 2-under 69-73, 142, tying for second place overall and Chapital posted an even-par 73-71, 144 to finish in a tie for fifth. Gonzalez, 7274, 146, tied for eighth and Bublitz, 72-77, 149, tied for 13th.  All four players earned All-Western State Conference honors.

Other overall scores on the day for the Pirates included Daniel Darwin, 79-80, 159, and Fisher, 84-75, 159.

Ventura finished the season in second place in the WSC standings, earning an automatic team bid to the 3C2A Southern California Regionals on Monday May 5 at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills.
