With new rules governing 3C2A golf in 2026, event standings have tightened up. In the first Western State Conference meet of the season, the Pirates' golf team finished fifth of eight teams Monday, grouped in a bunch of five teams all within two strokes of each other. Bradley Humphrey led Ventura with a 3-over 75 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale as VC posted a team score of 316.
In past years, team competition was decided by combining the best five of six individual scores in an event. Beginning in 2026, team standings will be decided by adding the top four of six individual scores. Tiebreakers are then decided by the fifth individual score of each team.
The Pirates posted a team score of 316 Monday, two strokes behind Bakersfield, Citrus and host Glendale, and tied with Santa Barbara. Canyons won the team competition with a score of 297 while Citrus claimed second with the best fifth individual score. VC finished ahead of Santa Barbara in the team standings by virtue of a better fifth-player score.
Humphrey tied for third individually with his 75 while Freddie Carcamo tied for sixth with a 4-over 76. Nathan Schultz turned in a score of 82 while Donovan Chappell and Caden Raines each carded an 83. Matthew Jones shot 88 to complete the VC roster.
Ventura defeated Santa Barbara in the tiebreaker to place fifth overall with the fifth individual score of 83 which was better than the Vaqueros' 85.
The Pirates next hit the links on Monday Feb. 16 at the WSC No. 2 event hosted by Santa Barbara at Alisal Ranch Golf Course in Solvang.
