Pirate sophomore Hrionori Koyanagi placed second over the weekend at the USTA/ICA National Small College Championships in South Carolina.  He also teamed up with doubles partner Corey Karen to place third in the national tournament.

Pirate tennis sensation Hironori Koyanagi advanced to the national championship match, and the doubles team of Koyanagi and Corey Karen placed third over the weekend at the 2015 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Sumpter, SC. Koyanagi ultimately was defeated in his final match, but it did not dim the accomplishments of both players on the national stage.

Pirate sophomore Hironori Koyanagi won the singles championship, and doubles championship with partner Corey Karen, at the ITA Southern California Regional Tournament.  It is the second year Koyanagi has pulled off the double championships, an unprecedented feat.
Koyanagi Wins ITA SoCal Fall Singles and Doubles, Again

Reigning state singles champion Hironori Koyanagi continues to make history for VC tennis. Now a sophomore, the Fukuoka, Japan native claimed the singles title of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Fall Southern California Regional Championships in Cerritos over the weekend. Additionally, he and doubles partner Corey Karen claimed the doubles title at he event.

Koyanagi Named to ITA Collegiate All-Star Team

Pirate freshman tennis sensation Hironori Koyanagi was named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Star Team for 2015. Koyanagi, who completed a perfect 23-0 in claiming the CCCAA State Championship at The Ojai Tournament in April, was the lone male JC/CC honoree on the national list that highlights players through the NCAA Division I level.

Ventura College men's tennis players Hironori Koyanagi and Corey Karen were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association JC/CC All-Americans for the 2015 season. Both players earned the honor in singles, and as a duo in doubles play, as announced by the organization last month.

Koyanagi Has Perfect Ending at State Championships

Hironori Koyanagi put he finishing touches on an undefeated season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the CCCAA State Singles Championship match Sunday afternoon in the final of The Ojai Tournament at Libbey Park. The Pirate freshman did not drop a set all season in winning VC's third ever state singles title, the first since 2005.

Pirate freshman Hironori Koyanagi continued his march through the CCCAA State Singles Championships at The Ojai Tournament Saturday, winning two more straight-set decisions to advance to the state singles finals on Sunday. Meanwhile, he also teamed up with doubles partner Corey Karen to move to the state semifinals.

VC freshman Corey Karen advanced to the state quarterfinals with an upset win Friday.  He will also play in the doubles quarterfinals with partner Hironori Koyanagi.

Hironori Koyanagi and Corey Karen both advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the CCCAA State Championships at The Ojai Tournament Friday. Additionally, the pair also moved to the quarterfinals in doubles, setting themselves up for a busy weekend at the state championships.

Men's Tennis Strong on First Day of State Championships

The Pirates' men's tennis team had a strong day on the first day of the CCCAA State Tennis Championships hald at The Ojai Tournament Thursday. VC's top two singles players, No. 1 seed Hironori Koyanagi and No. 9 Corey Karen were among three Pirates to move to the round of 32, and also advanced in doubles as the No. 1 seed.

Vitor Mendes, a standout tennis player for the Pirates' men's team in 2013 and 2014, has signed a national letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at NCAA Division I Wichita State University in Kansas. Vitor, who was the 2014 Western State Conference MVP, used his redshirt year to complete his AA degree at Ventura College this year, and will still have two years to play two for the Shockers.

Men's Tennis Sweeps Honors at WSC Championships

The Ventura College men's tennis team swept the singles and doubles titles at the conclusion of the Western State Conference Championships Friday at the VC Tennis Center. No. 1-seed Hironori Koyanagi defeated teammate and No. 3-seed Corey Karen 6-3, 6-3 before the two teamed up to defeat teammates Guenter Newman and Michael Burr for the doubles title, 6-1, 6-4.

Pirate Tennis Comes Up Short in Playoffs

Leading 2-1 after the doubles competition, the No. 5 seed Ventura College men's tennis team was unable to hold on at No. 3 San Diego Mesa Tuesday afternoon. Hironori Koyanagi easily won his No. 1 singles match, and VC was up a set in four other singles matches, but the Olympians came back for the win to advance.

The Western State Conference champion Ventura College men's tennis team is headed to the playoffs. The Pirates received the No. 5 seed in the CCCAA Southern California Regionals and will travel to San Diego Mesa College on Tuesday April 7 for a 2:00 pm match.

Michael Burr won a marathon three-set match against teammate Leonardo Santos in the back draw Saturday to advance to the state championships at The Ojai later in April.
Koyanagi, Karen Advance to WSC Singles Championship

The Ventura College men’s tennis team played well for the second day in a row at the Western State Conference tennis championships at the VC Tennis Center Saturday. Top-seed Hironori Koyanagi and No. 3 Corey Karen both posted a pair of wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, to advance to face each other in next week’s WSC men’s singles final.

Pirate Men Dominate Day 1 of WSC Championships

The Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships have become a showcase for the Ventura College men's tennis team. On day one of the three-day event, the Pirates advanced all four doubles teams to the quarterfinals, while placing five of eight singles players into the quarterfinals.

Corey Karen easily won in No. 2 singles, and won in No. 1 singles with Hiro Koyanagi as VC defeated Grossmont 7-2 to close out the regular season Tuesday.
Pirate Tennis Closes Out Regular Season With Win

The Pirates' men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a solid 7-2 win over Grossmont College Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. Ventura (10-3, 6-0) was led by a solid performance from Corey Karen as he defeated his opponent love and love in No. 2 singles.

Hironori Koyanagi continued his perfect singles campaign moving to 11-0 on the year with a win in the No. 1 slot, helping the Pirates to a 9-0 sweep of Bakersfield to secure a perfect 6-0 WSC record.
Men's Tennis Has Perfect Ending to Conference Season

With a perfect 9-0 sweep of Bakersfield, setting a perfect 6-0 Western State Conference record, the Ventura College Men's Tennis team had a perfect ending to their conference season on Tuesday afternoon at the VC Tennis Center. Hironori Koyanagi led the charge, moving to a perfect 11-0 on the year in No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
