2017 Ventura College Men's Tennis Team News
The Ventura College men's tennis team dominated the All-Western State Conference awards announced last month. VC No. 1 player Augustin Lestelle was named the conference Player of the Year in voting by the conference coaches for his play during the regular season, and Pirate head coach nelson Emery was named WSC Coach of the Year.
The 2017 Ventura College men's tennis season came to an end Friday when the doubles team of Bill Whitaker and Cruz Thayne fell in the Round of 16 at the CCCAA State Championships at The Ojai Tournament. Whitaker also bowed out of the tournament in the Sweet 16 of singles competition earlier in the day. Meanwhile the doubles pair of Augustin Lestelle and Damon Mitchell fell Friday in the Round of 32. Lestelle fell in singles play in the Round of 32, as well.
The Pirates' men's tennis team had a solid first day of the CCCAA State Championships at The Ojai Tournament Thursday. Playing at courts throughout the city of Oxnard, VC had two singles players and two doubles teams move on to the Round of 32 Friday. Bill Whitaker and Augustin Lestelle advanced in singles, while Damon Mitchell joined Lestelle and Cruz Thayne teamed up with Whitaker to move forward in doubles.
Bill Whitaker and Cruz Thayne upheld their No. 1 seed in the Western State Conference men's doubles draw, coming from behind to defeat the No. 2 duo from Glendale 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 Friday at the VC Tennis Center. The win was the fifth consecutive conference title for a Pirate doubles team. Additionally, Whitaker advanced to the men's singles final before falling to the tournament's top seed.
The Pirates' men's tennis team season came to an unexpected end Tuesday as No. 4-seed Ventura lost to No. 5 Saddleback 5-4 in the first round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs at the VC Tennis Center. After falling behind 2-1 after doubles play, the Pirates rallied to take a 4-3 advantage before dropping the final two matches of the day to see their dual season come to an end.
The 3-Peat Western State Conference champion Pirates' men's tennis team received the No. 4 seed in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs and will host Saddleback in the first round on Tuesday April 11. THe victory was the Pirates' 10th this season in WSC play without a setback, and their 27th straight conference triumph dating back to March 6, 2014. Augustin Lestelle and rodrigo Perdigao led the way with victories at BNos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively and together at No. 2 doubles.
The VC men's tennis team swept Los Angeles Pierce twice Thursday to clinch their thirs straight Western State Conference crown. The Pirates defeated the Brahmas 5-0 in the first match of the day, a make-up from Tuesday's rained-out contest, before defeating LAPC 9-0 in the second, a make-up from February 21. Hamilton Walker and Anthony Bovino each won matches love and love during the double-header.
The Ventura College men's tennis team completed the North/South Challenge in Fresno Saturday with a split of a pair of matches. VC (11-4, 7-0) lost to NorCal power Foothill 5-2 before shutting out host Fresno City 8-0 in the second match of the day. Bill Whitaker won two doubles matches, first with Cruz Thayne, and then with Damon Mitchell. Thayne also won his only singles contest of the day.
The Pirates' men's tennis team began the North/South Challenge in Fresno with a difficult 5-2 loss to American River College Friday afternoon. Manu Rowe and Rodrigo Perdigao won in No. 3 doubles and Cruz Thayne earned a point in No. 4 singles for VC's scoring on the day.
The Pirates' men's tennis team blanked visiting Victor Valley 9-0 on Thursday, moving their magic number to one to clinch their third straight Western State Conference championship. Florent Auteuil and Sam Gazarra both did not lose a game on the day, winning love and love in Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively, and winning 8-0 together in No. 3 doubles.
