Ventura Takes Two at North/South Challenge to Retain Phister Cup
The VC men's tennis team completed a three match sweep at the North/South Challenge in Bakersfield with a pair of wins Saturday to retain the Hank Phister Cup. The Pirates shut out Porterville 9-0 in the morning before defeating Fresno 8-1 in the afternoon to secure three wins on the weekend. Manolo Vanbesien and Antonio Cardiel each earned four victories on the day, two each in singles play and two as teammates in doubles competition.

Ventura made quick work of Porterville in the morning match, sweeping past the Pirates of the Central Valley, 9-0. All three VC doubles pairs, Yanis Guerrout and Ariitea Cotti-Helme at No. 1, Shingo Ono and Victor Peyrebonne at No. 3, and Vanbesien and Cardiel at No. 3, swept past their opponents by 8-0 scores.
Peyrebonne and Vanbesien each shutout their opponents love and love in the Nos. 3 and 4 singles matches while Cardiel won his No. 5 singles contest love and two. Christian Montecino produced a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 6 singles. Caua Coimbra won on Court 1 6-1, 6-2 and Abladj Mondroha won in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
The Pirates closed the weekend with a solid 8-1 triumph over Fresno. By a unique coincidence, all three doubles teams won by identical scores for the second match of the day, all claiming 8-3 victories.
VC also claimed five of the six singles contests. Vanbesien was the first to register a win, 6-2, 6-1 on Court 4, followed by Cardiel in the No. 5 slot, 6-1, 6-1. Cotti-Helme recorded a 6-3, 6-0 triumph in No. 2 singles and Coimbra defeated his opponent on Court 1, 6-1, 6-3. Ono produced the final win of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 score in No. 3 singles.
Ventura (14-7, 4-0) returns to Western State Conference play on Tuesday Mar. 24, traveling to Bakersfield.
