Pirate Track Finishes 1st, 2nd at WSC North

The VC men's track and field team used sweeps in the 100m and 200m to claim first place of the five competing teams at the Western State Conference North meet Friday at Cuesta. The Pirate women came in second in the event. Trevor McCarthy won the 200m and the javelin to lead Ventura while Jason Cutting, Shaun Tolson, and Max Daniel also claimed individual gold. Brianna Torres claimed a pair of golds for the VC women and Mayagrace Wilson and Elizabeth Mejia also won events.

McCarthy (St. Bonaventure) ran the 200m in 22.24 to break the tape first and threw 177'10" to claim gold in the javelin.

Daniel (Buena) led the Pirates' sweep of the 100m in 11.04 followed by Micah Contreras (Camarillo) and Camren Harris (Oxnard). Meanwhile, McCarthy led the sweep of the 200m with Daniel and Tolson (Oxnard) claiming second and third, respectively.

Tolson won the 400m in 50.69 with McCarthy finishing second.

Cutting ran the 110m hurdles in 16.91 to finish ahead of the pack and he came in second in the 400m hurdles and sixth in the 100m. Contreras added a silver in the 110m hurdles. Alex Giron (Oxnard) claimed bronze in the 400m hurdles.

Cole Everett (Nordhoff) won silver in the high jump and Jerry Ayala (Rio Mesa) was third in the hammer throw and fifth in the discus. Zac Crist (Foothill Tech) was fourth in the long jump and Alejandro Gomez (Oxnard) finished fifth in the 400m. Liam Genkel (Ventura) was fifth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump and 200m events. Ivan Aleman (Rio Mesa) came in fifth in the 800m.

Ventura's 4x100m B relay team of Tolson, Gomez, Genkel and Joseph Moore (Moorpark) came in second while the 4x400m relay quartet of Moore, Tolson, Contreras and Gomez also were the runners-up.

The Pirate men totaled 156.5 points o the day to edge out Cuesta with 140.5. Hancock (94), Bakersfield (75) and Santa Barbara (37) rounded out the field.

Torres (Oxnard) was a double winner in both the 1500m (5:08.07) and 300m (11:33.46). Wilson (Agoura) won the 100m for the second straight meet, breaking the tape in 12.55. She also won silver in the 200m. Meanwhile, Mejia (Oxnard) won the 400m hurdles in 1:15.33 while also coming in fifth in the 100m hurdles.

Chloe Williams (Buena) won two medals, a silver in the 100m and a bronze in the 200m. Ashley Crist (Foothill Tech) was second in the long jump, fourth in the 100m hurdles and fourth in the javelin. Amia Cason ran second in the 100m hurdles and also crossed fifth in the 100m, and Leshelle Lee finished fourth in the long jump. Avalyn Everett (Summitt School) came in fifth in the long jump and sixth in the 100m hurdles. 

VC also had sixth place finishes with Kelsey Crist (Foothill Tech) in the 100m, Avery Wells (Buena) in the long jump, and Guadalupe Jimenez (Channel Islands) in the hammer throw.

The Pirates' 4x100 me relay team of Wilson, A. Crist, Williams and K. Crist ran a 49.81 to claim gold and the 4x400m group of Mejia, Yesenia (Molina) Wynne (Oxnard), Williams and Lee finished second.

The VC women scored 118 points to finish second behind Cuesta (155). Bakersfield (60), Hancock (55) and Santa Brbara (38) finished behind the Pirates.

"It was great to see our athletes compete at a high level and continue their progression as the season moves forward," said head coach Tom Czerwinski.

"We had several standout performances across the board, and I'm excited to see how this group develops heading into the next phase of competition."

The Pirates will next compete at the Viking Invitational in Long Beach on Friday March 7.
