VC Track & Field Teams qualify several for WSC Championships
The Ventura College men's and women's track and field teams qualified several individuals for the Western State Conference Championships Friday at the WSC Prelims held at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. Ja'Varien Salter qualified with the fastest time in the 200m and was second in the 100m qualifying while Brianna Richards was second in the 800m and also moved forward in the 1500m. Mateo Chavez and Alyna Renteria qualified for the Southern California Prelims in finals events in the shot put and discus, respectively.

Ja'Varien Salter qualified with the fastest time in the 200m and was second in the 100m qualifying while Brianna Richards was second in the 800m and also moved forward in the 1500m. Mateo Chavez and Alyna Renteria qualified for the Southern California Prelims in finals events in the shot put and discus, respectively.
Chavez placed fourth in the shot put finals to qualify for the regionals and he also placed ninth in the discus. Zac Crist came in 13th in the long jump finals and Marcelo Mendoza placed 11th in the 10000m run. The top seven in the conference finals move forward to the regionals.
Meanwhile, Renteria was seventh in the discus, moving ahead to SoCal's and she also placed 12th in the shot put. Honest Watson, Avery Wells and Kelsey Crist were ninth, 12th and 13th, respectively, in the long jump.
Salter posted a mark of 21.46 in the 200m, the fastest qualifying mark of the day, and also moved forward to the WSC Championships in the 100m along with teammate Jeremiah Penny. Ty Brown will compete in the finals in the 110m and 400m hurdles while Luke Carnaghe also advanced in the 400m hurdles. Alex Giron will join Brown in the 110m hurdles event next week at the conference finals.
Richards ran a 2:22.91 in the 800m to qualify for the WSC's in second and she also moved forward in the 1500m run. Watson ran fourth in the 100m dash to qualify, as well, for the VC women.
Additionally, the men's 4x100m relay team of Makaio Thompson, Max Daniel, Salter and Penny will run in the conference championships as will the 4x400m quartet of Brown, Salter, Carnaghe and Penny. Henry Fulk and Mendoza will run in the 5oom finals.
The women's 4x100m relay team of Crist, Wells, Leia Ludy and Watson will also compete at the WSC Championships.
The conference finals will be held Friday Apr. 24 at Moorpark.
