Pirate Season Comes to a End in State Quarterfinals

The Pirates' season came to a heartbreaking conclusion Friday with a 59-57 loss to Diablo Valley College in the CCCAA State Quarterfinals at the VC Athletic Event Center. The Pirates, seeded No. 4 from Southern California, went toe-to-toe with Northern California's top-seed in a game that featured 12 lead changes and five ties, and the margin stayed primarily within five points. Cece Quintino led the Pirates (25-10) with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds while Victoria Maciel and Madison Cvijanovich each totaled 11 points.

The Pirates' women's basketball team has proven itself to be elite once again, defeating Irvine Valley 73-53 Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center to advance to the CCCAA State Elite Eight for a state record 18th time, the 17th time in 29 years under head coach Ned Mircetic. Talia Taufaasau had 24 points, including 19 in the second half, to lead the way while Emma Larson set her second-season high in as many games with 16 points. Cece Quintino netted 13 points with six rebounds and six assists for the Pirates (25-9).

Pirates Sweet 16 Bound After Playoff Victory

Ventura College guard Cece Quintino had a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds Friday night, including eight points in the fourth quarter, leading four teammates in double figures as the Pirates' women's basketball team defeated visiting Rio Hondo 60-49 in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs. Talia Taufaasau had 15 points and six assists as the Pirates (24-9) advanced to the California Sweet 16 for the 22nd time in the past 29 years under head coach Ned Mircetic.

Four members of the 2018-19 Ventura College women's basketball team have been named All-Western State Conference in voting by the WSC North Division coaches earlier this week. Victoria Maciel, LaDaesha Merriweather, Cece Quintino and Talia Taufaasau all earned first-team All-WSC nods for their performance during the 2019 conference season.

With less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, the VC women's basketball team trailed Cuesta 35-32 and were in need of a spark. Enter Talia Taufaasau. The freshman point guard scored the game's next nine points to give the Pirates a 41-35 advantage and led Ventura (23-8, 8-1) with 25 points and nine assists in their 60-51 victory over Cuesta in San Luis Obispo Tuesday night. LaDaesha Merriweather, meanwhile seemingly rebounded every missed shot, pulling in 18 boards in the victory.

Pirate guard Talia Taufaasau netted 22 points, shooting 7-15 from the floor (35- from three) and 5-7 at the foul line as the VC women's basketball team over matched Oxanrd 71-33 Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center. Cece Quintino had 16 points, 14 in the second half, with seven rebounds, and Madison Cvijanovich totaled 12 points for Ventura (22-8, 7-1). Victoria Maciel contributed eight points to the Pirate victory.

It was not their best game of the season, but it was effective just the same. The Pirates' women's basketball team used a second quarter surge to pull ahead of Allan Hancock College Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center, en route to posting a 56-42 victory over the Bulldogs. Cece Quintino led Ventura (21-8, 6-1) with 21 points, four assists and four rebounds while Talia Taufaasau chipped in 10 points and five dimes. Victoria Maciel had eight points and seven rebounds in the victory.

Pirates Top Vaqueros, Post 20 Wins for 30th Straight Year

One benchmark of a successful season in basketball is a team reaching 20 wins. With their 69-58 victory at Santa Barbara City College Saturday night, the Pirates' women's basketball team reached 20 wins for the season, for the 30th straight year. Talia Taufaasau netted 24 points with seven assists and LaDaesha Merriweather posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead VC (20-8, 5-1) to the wire-to-wire victory.

Pirates Fall at Moorpark To End First Round of WSC

In a battle between two of the top-ranked teams in the state, the Pirates' women's basketball team dropped a 96-82 decision at Moorpark Wednesday night. The Pirates trailed the top-ranked Raiders by as many as 19 points midway through the third period before VC (19-8, 4-1) worked the deficit back to six points in the final minute of the game. Talia Taufaasau led No. 15-ranked Ventura with 21 points four rebounds and three assists while Cece Quintino added 19 points while handing out seven dimes and pulling in six boards.

Taufaasau, Cvijanovich Lead Pirates Past Cuesta

Madison Cvijanovich had a career-high 15 points on five made 3-pointers, and Talia Tuafaasau controlled the Pirates offense with 19 points to lead VC past Cuesta 57-39 Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Cavijanovich hit three triples in the first quarter and taufaasau scored 10 points in the second to knock back he Cougars with a one-two punch. Robin Prince totaled eight points with 13 rebounds to anchor the front line for the Pirates (19-7, 4-0).

VC Women Race Past Oxnard, 70-38

Victoria Maciel led four Pirates in double figures with 17 points as the Ventura College women's basketball team raced past Oxnard 70-38 Saturday afternoon in a road Western State Conference North Division match-up. The redshirt freshman also had five rebounds and handed out five assists in leading VC (18-7, 3-0) to their eighth victory in the last nine games. LaDaesha Merriweather posted her third double-double in four outings with 14 points and 11 boards.

Ventura Takes Road Game at Hancock, 59-46

The Ventura College women's basketball team used another strong third quarter performance to pull away from Allan Hancock in VC's 59-46 Western State Conference North Division game in Santa Maria Wednesday. Cece Quintino led the Pirates (17-7, 2-0) with 21 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals while Victoria Maciel had the outside touch with five three's en route to 18 points. Talia Taufaasau contributed 11 points and dropped six dimes and LaDaesha Merriweather pulled in 10 rebounds.

VC Rallies Past Vaqueros to Open Conference Play

The Ventura College women's basketball team used a strong third quarter to rally past visiting Santa Barbara 64-51 Saturday at the Athletic Event Center in the Western State Conference opener for both teams. Talia Taufaasau had 24 points and five assists, playing all 40 minutes for Ventura while Victoria Maciel also played without a break contributing 18 points and five rebounds. LaDaesha Merriweather posted her second straight double-double with 13 points and 12 boards for the Pirates (16-7, 1-0).

Cece Quintino hit a mid-range jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining to lift the Pirates' women's basketball team to a hard-fought 70-69 victory over Palomar College Saturday night in the third place game of the SoCal Crossover Tournament at the Athletic Event Center. LaDaesha Merriweather had a double-double animal style with 12 points and 21 huge rebounds in the victory as VC closed out their non-conference schedule with a 15-7 record. Victoria Maciel had an efficient 14-point performance and Talia Taufaasau netted 12 points with six rebounds and four assists.

Pirates Drop Tournament Semifinal at Pasadena

Early foul trouble and an anemic offensive performance in the second half doomed the Pirates' women's basketball team to a 62-41 defeat at Pasadena City College Wednesday night in the semifinals of the SoCal Crossover Tournament White Bracket. Talia Taufaasau was the lone Pirate in double figures with 18 points and seven rebounds while LaDaesha Merriweather had a game-high 12 boards. Ventura will host Palomar college on Saturday Jan. 12 at 6:00pm in the bracket's third-place game.

VC Escapes With Victory Against West LA to Open Tournament

The VC women's basketball team escaped with a 59-57 victory over visiting West Los Angeles College Saturday night in the opening round of the SoCal Crossover Tournament. Cece Quintino led the Pirates with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Victoria Maciel totaled 14 points with seven boards. With the victory, Pirate head coach Ned Mircetic ties legendary Santa Clara High School boys coach Lou Cvijanovich with 829 wins as the winningest basketball coaches in Ventura County history.

Ventura Claims Optimist Tournament Championship

Behind a dominant 17-point fourth quarter performance from freshman Talia Taufaasau, the Ventura College women's basketball team battled back from a 10-point first half deficit to claim a 73-62 victory over Mt. San Jacinto in the championship game of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament Sunday at the Athletic Event Center. VC (13-6) trailed the defending state champions 50-46 heading into the final period before Taufaasau earned MVP honors by leading the comeback for Ventura.

Victoria Maciel ahd 20 points while Talia Taufaasau and Cece Quintino each netted 18 as the Pirates' women's basketball team defeated Rio Hondo 64-49 Saturday evening to advance to the championship game o fhte VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament. Taufaasau added eight assists, Quintino had nine rebounds, and LaDaesha Merriweather hauled i 18 boards for VC (12-6). Ventura advances to the tournament final against Mt. The Pirates' women's basketball team came back from Christmas break looking merry and bright on Friday, running past Antelope Valley 79-47 in the first round of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament at the Athletic Event Center. Cece Quintino nearly recorded a triple-double with 20 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists while Madison Cvijanovich netted a career high 19 points, including five made 3-pointers, in pacing the Pirates (11-6) into the tournament semifinals on Saturday against Rio Hondo.

The Pirates'women's basketball team dropped a 75-60 decision to Riverside City College Friday in the third place game of the Glendale College Holiday Tournament. Victoria Maciel earned All-Tournament honors with her 17-point performance and Cece Quintino led Ventura offensively with 20 points. Talia Taufaasau also netted 17 points and LaDaesha Merriweather pulled in 13 rebounds for VC (10-6).

Ventura Falls in Tournament Semifinals

The Pirates' women's basketball team showed improvement, but still left too much room for error Thursday afternoon, battling No. 3-ranked Los Angeles Trade Tech to a 65-58 loss in the semifinals of the Glendale College Holiday Tournament. Ventura (10-5) held a 29-27 halftime advantage, but a rough third quarter lifted the Beavers to the win. Talia Taufaasau led VC with 20 points and a pair of assists while Cece Quintino netted 13 points with six rebounds, three dimes and three steals.

Late Rally Leads Pirates to Victory Over Canyons

The VC women's basketball team used a late rally Wednesday afternoon to come back and defeat College of the Canyons 68-64 in the opening round of the Glendale College Holiday Tournament. VC (10-4) trailed 62-54 with 3:00 remaining before making the come back. Robin Prince rallied the Pirates with a pair of late buckets inside, Emma Larson had a big three, while Talia Taufaasau and Cece Quintino closed things out at the free throw line. Ventura plays LA Trade Tech in the tournament semifinals Thursday Dec. 20 at 3:00 pm.

Mistakes Costly in Pirate Loss in All-Star Classic Final

If the Pirates' women's basketball team has shown one thing over the past few weeks, it is that they can play with the best teams in the state. They have also shown that too many mistakes can lead to losses. VC committed 13 first half turnovers and shot 26 percent (6-23) in the opening 20 minutes as they fell behind Los Angeles Trade Tech 34-20 at intermission in the championship game of the LAVC-Buddy's All-Star Classic Sunday, eventually falling to the Beavers 66-50. Talia Taufaasau earned all-tournament honors leading VC (9-4) with 14 points and five assists.

Ventura Holds Off San Francisco in LAVC Tourney Semifinals

The VC women's basketball team held off hard charging San Francisco Saturday night, posting a 70-67 victory over the Rams in the semifinals of the LAVC-Buddy's All-Star classic at Los Angeles Valley College. Ventura (9-3) led CCSF 62-51 with 4:52 remining before the Rams came all the way back to take a 67-66 advantage. A lay-up by Cece Quintino with 32 seconds left, and two free throws by LaDaesha Merriweather with 14 seconds on the clock set the final margin for VC.

The Ventura College women's basketball tem pulled away from San Bernardino Valley in the second half of Friday's game, posting a 77-47 victory over the Wolverines in the opening round of the Buddy's All-Star Classic at Los Angeles Valley College. Cece Quintino had a economical output with 28 points on just 19 shots while handing out 10 assists to lead VC (8-3). Talia Taufaasau followed with 23 points in the victory. Ventura advances to Saturday's semifinal against San Francisco at 5:00 pm in Valley Glen.

Cece Quintino posted a career-high 31 points to earn all-tournament honors and Victoria Maciel hit five threes en route to 23 points for VC (7-3). LaDaesha Merriweather pulled in 15 big rebounds in the winning cause.

The Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias is no joke. The state's premier tournament is a difficult test, and the young Pirates found that out first half Saturday night against the host Giants. After taking a 22-14 lead early in the second quarter, VC (6-3) hit a wall as Sequoias went on a 17-3 run to close the half as the Pirates fell to the Giants 61-48 in the tournament semifinals Saturday night. Talia Taufaasau netted 18 points with six rebounds to lead Ventura and Cece Quintino totaled 14 points. LaDaesha Merriweather pulled in 12 rebounds.

The Ventura College women's basketball team put together their best overall effort of the young season, posting a 74-52 victory Friday over Reedley College to advance to the semifinals of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. Talia Taufaasau had a career night , shooting 8-16 from the floor, 3-8 from three, and 9-10 at the foul line for 30 points. Cece Quintino netted 21 and LaDaesha Merriweather posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. VC (6-2) will take on host Sequoias at 8:00 pm Saturday in the tournament semifinals.

Pirates Outlast Santa Rosa at Gilcrest Invite

Talia Taufaasau hit for 15 points, and Cece Quintino had 14 points and nine rebounds as the Pirates' womens basketball team outlasted Santa Rosa 48-39 in the opening round of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. LaDaesha Merriweather pulled in 11 rebounds as VC (5-2) had a 13-0 run over a 10 minute period in the third and fourth quarters to turn a tie game into a Ventura victory. The Pirates will take on Reedley in the tournament quarterfinals Friday at 5:00 pm.

The VC women's basketball team had a game they will soon like to forget Sunday, falling in the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions final 46-27 to Mt. San Antonio College. LaDaesha Merriweather had six points and nine rebounds and Nikki Puga netted seven points to lead VC. Puga and Cece Quintino were awarded all-tournament honors for the Pirates (4-2).

The Pirates' women's basketball team continued a familiar story Saturday, advancing to their 12th straight VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions final with a 66-41 victory over Santa Monica Saturday night. Cece Quintino netted 21 points with eight rebounds, Nikki Puga came off the bench for 19 big points and Emma Larson pulled in a game-high 11 boards to key the victory. VC (4-1) will take on Mt. San Antonio College on Sunday in the ToC championship game at 4:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center.

From the beginning of the game, the Pirates' women's basketball team overwhelmed visiting Ohlone College in the opening round of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions Friday at the Athletic Event Center. After racing out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, VC went on to post the 87-25 victory over the Renegades on Black Friday. Cece Quintino had 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds to lead the way while Nikki Puga totaled 15 points with five made 3-pointers. Victoria Maciel posted an efficient 14 points with nine field goal attempts.

The Ventura College women’s basketball team claimed the consolation trophy of the Wild West Shootout at West Los Angeles College in Culver City Saturday with a 60-31 victory over Oxnard College. Talia Taufaasau earned all-tournament honors with a 17-point, five-assist, four-steal performance and Nikki Puga had 15 points and seven rebounds.  Victoria Maciel contrinuted 10 points and six boards to the victory for the Pirates (2-1).

VC Comes Back From 17 Down to Defeat LA Valley

The Pirates women’s basketball team trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half before coming from behind to defeat LA Valley 59-55 Friday afternoon in an elimination game in the Wild West shootout at West LA College in Culver City. VC (1-1) trailed 30-13 with 6:45 remaining in the second quarter before slowly working their way back into the game. Nikki Puga and Cece Quintino led the Pirates with 15 points each while LaDaesha Merriweather netted 11 points with nine rebounds.

The VC women's basketball team had a difficult time putting the ball in the basket Thursday night, falling to El Camino 61-55 at the Wild West Shootout at West LA College in the Pirates' season opener. Ventura hit just 28 percent of their shot attempts (18-64) and turned the ball over 17 times, 10 times in the first half, in dropping their second straight opener to the Warriors. Cece Quintino led the Pirates with 18 points, six assists and five rebounds and Victoria Maciel made four 3-pointers en route to 16 points.
