Women's Basketball Earns No. 7 Ranking in WBCA Honor Roll

The VC women's basketball team has once again been honored for academic achievement by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on its annual Top 25 Academic Honor Roll. The 2021-22 Pirates earned a 2.288 overall grade point average for the academic year to place seventh on the WBCA's national academic honor roll. It is the 18th time in the past 19 years that Ventura has been recognized by the national organization, making it the most-recognized academic achieving women's basketball program in the country.

Five members of the VC women's basketball team earned All-Western State Conference honors for the 2021-22 season, as selected by conference coaches last month. Leading the honors is Kenya Edelhart who was voted the WSC Most Valuable Player for the co-champion Pirates. Kylie Gallick, Alyssandra Lacanilao, Sofia Torres-Reyes and Mya Victor were also named first team all-conference.

VC Women Fall in Playoffs to Last-Second Heartbreaker

The ups and downs and twists and turns of playoff basketball were on full display Thursday in Monterey Park as the No. 11-seeded VC women went from looking at the thrill of victory to experiencing the agony of a heartbreaking defeat in their 59-57 last-second loss at No. 6 East Los Angeles. The Huskies hit a 12-footer over a defensive hand at the buzzer to advance over the Pirates (16-11), who were led by Kylie Gallick's 13-point, 11 rebound double-double and Kenya Edelhart's 10-point, nine assist, eight board performance.

Ventura College freshman Alisha Cruz-Lisberg scored nine points with three rebounds, three assists and three steals to help the Pirates to a 70-34 victory over Cuesta Friday night in San Luis Obispo. With the win, VC clinched a share of the program's 32nd WSC North Division title.

The Pirates' women's basketball team doubled-up Cuesta 70-34 Friday night in San Luis Opispo, claiming a share of the 2022 Western State Conference North Division championship. Kylie Gallick posted another In-N-Out special with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Kenya Edelhart scored 15 points with four boards and three assists. Sofia Torres-Reyes netted 15 points on five made 3-pointers and Maddie Ozbourn totaled 10 points with wight caroms in the game.

VC forward Kylie Gallick scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to help lead the Pirates past Oxnard 47-31 Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. Mya Victor had eight points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots, tied for second-best in program history, while Sofia Torres-Reyes netted 11 points in the triumph. The victory was the 10th straight for Ventura (15-10, 10-1).

Pirates put Vaqueros on Lockdown in Victory

Behind an outstanding defensive effort, the VC women's basketball team defeated Santa Barbara City College 66-31 Monday night at the Athletic Event Center. The Pirates held the Vaqueros to 22 percent shooting from the floor (12-55) and forced 18 turnovers while not allowing SBCC a double-digit quarter or a double-digit scorer. Mya Victor led the Pirates with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds and Kenya Edelhart netted 16 with five assists in Ventura's ninth straight victory.

Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Ventura Past Moorpark

A pull-up jumper, a 3-point basket, two made free throws, a blocked shot - all big plays made down the stretch by the Pirates as they erased a seven point deficit with 9:07 left to play and turned it into a 66-61 victory at Moorpark Wednesday night. Kenya Edelhart scored 13 points on the night, eight in the decisive final period, and Mya Victor had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the charge. Kylie Gallick was rock-solid once again with 14 points and seven boards as VC (13-10, 8-1) won its eighth straight game.

VC Outlasts Vaqueros in Santa Barbara

The VC women's basketball team built a 10-point lead at halftime and made it hold up despite a charge by Santa Barbara as the Pirates came home with a 58-52 road win Monday. Kylie Gallick led Ventura with 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor and a 4-5 performance at the free throw line and Mya Victor came off the bench with 14 points, eight boards, four steals and three blocked shots. Sofia Torres-Reyes totaled 10 points and three assists for VC (12-10, 7-1).

The Pirates' women's basketball continued its improvement, making easy work of visiting Los Angeles Pierce College 94-23 Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center. Sofia Torres-Reyes scorched the nylon with 24 points, including four made three's, and Kylie Gallick had a big-time double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds to lead five players in double-figures. The VC defense, ranked No. 8 in the state, held the Brahmas 10 points under their season average in the victory.

Kenya Edelhart scored 15 points with a pair of assists and two steals and Sofia Torres Reyes netted 13 points with six rebounds. Kylie Gallick led a 54-38 rebound advantage for Ventura with 15 boards. With the victory, the fifth straight for the Pirates, VC evens its season mark at 10-10.

Ventura Defeats Cuesta for 4th Straight Win

Kenya Edelhart had her second-straight 20-point performance and Alyssandra Lacanilao hit four 3-pointers as the Pirates' women's basketball team won its fourth straight game Wednesday, 62-46 over Cuesta at the Athletic Event Center. Mya Victor recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds and Sofia Torres-Reyes added eight points. Kylie Gallick pulled in nine boards for the Pirates (9-10, 4-1).

Pirate Defense Preserves Victory Against Condors

The Pirates' women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to preserve a 38-33 win at Oxnard College Saturday afternoon. VC held the Condors 23 points under their season average to offset a difficult outing on offense for their second straight Western State Conference win. Kylie Gallick led Ventura with nine points, 15 rebounds, three steals and an assist. Alyssandra Lacanilao totaled eight points for the Pirates (7-10, 2-1).

Lacanilao, Victor Lead VC Past LA Pierce

Alyssandra Lacanilao scored 19 points on 6-10 shooting, 3-6 from three, and Mya Victor nearly produced a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocked shots to lead the Pirates' women's basketball team to a 77-35 victory at Los Angeles Pierce College Monday afternoon. Kenya Edelhart totaled 11 points in the game while Kylie Gallick had a double-double recording 10 points and 10 boards in the total team victory for Ventura.

VC Comeback Not Enough Against Raiders

Playing with a full squad for the first time in two months, the Pirates' women's basketball team had a difficult first quarter before mounting a comeback against Moorpark Saturday at the Athletic Event Center. The hill was too large to climb, however, as VC fell to the Raiders 73-59 in the Western State Conference opener for both teams. Kenya Edelhart and Alyssandra Lacanilao each scored 12 points for Ventura while Kylie Gallick came off the bench for nine points. Mya Victor and Alisha Cruz-Lisberg each pulled in a team-high four rebounds.

Ventura Drops Final Contest of 2021

The Ventura College women's basketball team had a cold shooting first quarter, and visiting Irvine Valley shot the lights out in the second as the Pirates dropped their final game of 2021 to the Lasers at the Athletic Event Center Thursday. Alyssandra Lacanilao had 19 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead Ventura and Sofia Torres-Reyes hit four treys for 14 points. Sam Martinez led Ventura on the glass with nine rebounds.

Pirates Come Alive at Los Angeles Trade Tech

In downtown Los Angeles, a stone's throw away from the basketball mecca soon to be formerly known as Staples Center, the still-shorthanded Pirates' women's basketball team had its best offensive night of the season, posting a 65-45 victory over Los Angeles Trade Tech. Sofia Torres-Reyes led four players in double-figures with 18 points and Maddie Ozbourn and Alyssandra Lacanilao each scored 15. Sam Martinez hit four 3-pointers for 12 points and Kylie Gallick grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The VC women's basketball team dropped a 62-41 decision to the host team on the final day of the LA Valley Buddy's All-Star Classic on Saturday. Alyssandra Lacanilao had 16 points to lead the Pirates. Maddie Ozbourn scored eight points with eight rebounds and Sam Martinez added eight points with six boards for VC, who put forth their sixth different starting line-up in 12 games due to injuries.

With an effort that did not match the final score, the shorthanded Pirates' women's basketball team dropped a 77-53 decision to Mt. San Antonio College in the semifinals of the LA Valley Buddy's All-Star Classic Friday. Sofia Torres-Reyes scored 22 points with five rebounds and three steals and Alyssandra Lacanilao totaled 21 points with five steals in a game during which the Pirates started with seven healthy players in uniform. Sam Martinez pulled in a team-high six rebounds in the contest.

On the strength of Mya Victor's double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, the VC women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the LA Valley Buddy's All-Star Classic with a 48-44 victory over Fullerton on Thursday. The VC sophomore also added five blocked shots to the effort and Alyssandra Lacanilao handed out a career-high seven assists in the win.

Pirates Drop Final Game to Gilcrest Tourney Hosts

Kylie Gallick had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and Mya Victor scored 10 points with four steals and four blocked shots, but the Pirates' women's basketball team dropped a 66-48 decision to Sequoias on the final day of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational in Visalia Saturday. VC trailed 31-28 at halftime when Sofia Torres-Reyes, who had eight first half points, was sidelined with an injury further depleting the VC back court. The Giants also shot a phenomenal 13-25 from 3-point range in the game.

The Pirates' women's basketball team controlled the inside in their 50-47 victory over LA Valley on the second day of the Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia on Friday afternoon. Maddie Ozbourn scored 15 points to lead the way while Mya Victor totaled 14 points five rebounds and four blocked shots. VC forward Kylie Gallick netted seven points with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Pirates had a solid defensive effort, but could not match it on the offensive end as they dropped the opening game of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia 43-28 to Butte College. VC played with six healthy players due to injuries and family obligations, and the six played an even first half before finding the waters difficult to traverse in the second. Alyssandra Lacanilao had 10 points and Mya Victor pulled in 11 rebounds to lead Ventura.

Women's Basketball Falls in ToC Finale

Playing its sixth game in nine days, and missing two regulars due to injury, the Pirates' women's basketball team ran out of gas toward the end of the game with Mt. San Antonio on Saturday in the third place game of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions. Ventura led 40-31 with 3:40 remaining in the third period, but was outscored 23-4 from that point on in the 54-44 setback. Sofia Torres-Reyes led Ventura with 11 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists in the game.

Pirates Can't Repeat Last Second Magic

In another down-to-the-wire game, the Pirates' women's basketball team could not repeat the magic of the previous night, falling to Long Beach 50-49 when their last-second shot sailed long in the semifinals of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions. Sofia Torres-Reyes hit a clutch 3-pointer with 1:13 remaining to tie the game, and nailed two free throws with 31 seconds left for a 49-48 VC lead. After LBCC made a pair of free throws, Toprres-Reyes' final attempt sailed long and VC dropped the 1-point decision.

Victor Hits Buzzer Beater for Pirate Victory

A day before her birthday, Mya Victor and her Pirate teammates had reason to celebrate. The transfer sophomore took an inbounds pass from Maddie Ozbourn and drained a long 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds remaining to lift VC to a 52-49 win over West Hills College Lemoore in the first round of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions Thursday. Victor finished the night with 16 points and 18 rebounds to lead Ventura (2-2) while Ozbourn added 15 boards to go along with six points and four assists.

After a couple of frustrating days searching for their new identity, the Pirates' women's basketball team took a step in the right direction with a 63-33 victory over host West Los Angeles College at the Wild West Shootout in Culver City Sunday. Mya Victor recorded the Pirates' first double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Alyssandra Lacanilao had 12 points with five assists and three steals. Sofia Torres-Reyes added an even dozen on the day, as well.

After 615 days away, the Pirates' women's basketball team was glad to be back Friday morning, but they certainly were not pleased with the result, a 59-53 setback against East Los Angeles at the Wild West Shootout at West LA college in Culver City. Sophomore Alyssandra Lacanilao scored 21 points, including four fourth quarter three's to help keep the Pirates in the game until the final minute. Freshman Sofia Torres-Reyes had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the opener for VC (0-1).
