VC Athletics 13th in California in NATYCAA Cup

The Ventura College Athletic Department claimed its 14th Top-13 finish in 19 years, placing 13th in California in the 2023-24 all-sports National Association of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup standings. Pirate Athletics totaled 106 points overall, besting its 105.5 points earned in 2022-23 that placed 12th. Ventura was also 17th for the second straight year in the Daktronics Cup Standings with two-years schools from California, Oregon and Washington.

VC Lists 70 transfers to 4-Year Schools

The Ventura College Athletic Department is proud to announce the transfer of 71 student athletes to four-year schools following their time with the Pirates. 48 of those transfers plan to continue their sport with 34 earning athletic scholarships. The VC class of 2024 will transfer to 48 different schools in 19 different states across the country. Additionally, 17 of the Pirate alumni have earned academic scholarships at their new schools.

The VC women's basketball team had a trio of players named to the All-Western State Conference North Division team in voting by the conference coaches following the regular season. Freshmen Alexa Coubal, Daphné LeBrun and Sam McKenzie all earned first team All-WSC honors for the Pirates.

Women's Basketball Falls in State Sweet 16

The Pirates' women's basketball team fell in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Final Saturday 67-50 at Moorpark. Alexa Coubal had another excellent outing with a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double and Elena Ferrara recorded a season-best 18 points including a 4-5 night from beyond the 3-point line. Mykah Johnson added six points off the bench and Tiernan Phillips pulled down seven boards in the game.

Coubal's "Sweet" Performance Leads Pirates to Regional Final

Alexa Coubal had an all-state worthy performance Saturday with 31 points and 11 rebounds leading the No. 10-seeded Pirates to a 69-62 victory at No. 7 Irvine Valley. Sam McKenzie also posted a "20-piece" with 20 points, seven boards and three steals as VC advanced to the State "Sweet 16." Tiernan Phillips scored seven points with seven rebounds as Ventura (20-10) reached the 20-win plateau for the 33rd time in the past 34 seasons.

Team Effort Pushes Ventura to Second Round of Playoffs

The Pirates' women's basketball team used the total team effort Wednesday to advance in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs with a 65-55 victory over San Diego City at the Athletic Event Center. Alexa Coubal led three Pirates in double figures with a 17-point, 17 rebound performance and Alexis Howery netted 16. Leslie Salazar scored 15 points with six rebounds and five assists and Tiernan Phillips pulled down nine boards for VC (19-10).

VC Women Fall to Hancock in Regular Season Finale

The Pirates' women's basketball team sailed into rough seas Friday, dropping its regular season finale 56-42 to visiting Allan Hancock. Ventura (18-10, 9-3) held a 35-31 lead in the final minute of the third quarter before giving up the big fourth quarter to the Bulldogs. Tiernan Phillips had 12 points and seven rebounds to lead the way for VC while Alexa Coubal scored seven points with 11 boards. Sam McKenzie and Alexis Howery also netted seven points in the setback.

Pirates Mount Second Half Comeback for Win at SBCC

After a poor first half performance, the VC women's basketball team had a complete turnaround in the second half in a 60-51 victory at Santa Barbara Saturday night. The Vaqueros led 30-16 at intermission before VC turned things around with a 23-6 third quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish. Alexa Coubal led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds and Tiernan Phillips turned in a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists and three steals. Sam McKenzie netted 13 points.

Pirate Women Overcome Slow Start With Big Win

The VC women's basketball team overcame a sluggish first quarter in defeating Los Angeles Pierce 74-53 in Woodland Hills Wednesday. Sam McKenzie led four Pirates in double-figures with 19 points and Alexa Coubal scored 13. Elena Ferrara and Alexis Howery contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. McKenzie, Howery and Leslie Salazar grabbed seven rebounds each while Coubal and Tiernan Phillips each had six boards. Salazar also handed out seven assists and Phillips dropped five dimes.

Ventura Pushes Moorpark Before Fading Late

The VC women's basketball team gave a great effort Saturday, holding an eight point advantage early in the fourth quarter before fading late in their 59-50 setback against the Raiders. Sam McKenzie scored 11 points and Alexa Coubal netted 10 with eight rebounds to lead the Pirates (16-9, 7-2). Alexis Howery stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, six boards, four steals and an assist and Daphné LeBrun also scored nine points.

Strong Defense Propels VC Past Cuesta

The Pirates' women's basketball team used a stingy defense and timely offense in the fourth quarter to pull away from visiting Cuesta 54-44 Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Sam McKenzie posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and Alexa Coubal led the way with 17 points, including an 11-12 night at the free throw line, along with eight boards. Daphné LeBrun scored seven points with three assists in the win for Ventura (16-8, 7-1).

VC Women Pull Away from Oxnard for Win

The VC women's basketball team took a while to get going, but they used a solid final 15 minutes of play to pull away from Oxnard 68-46 Saturday afternoon. Alexa Coubal posted her 13th double-double of the season with a team-high 21 points with 14 rebounds and Elena Ferrara continued her strong play off the bench with 10 points. Alexis Howery totaled nine points with five steals and Daphné LeBrun handed out seven assists, scored seven points and grabbed three steals for Ventura (15-8, 6-1).

VC Alumna Gallick Named 3C2A State Scholar Athlete

Ventura College women’s basketball alumna Kylie Gallick has been named the 2022-23 3C2A Female Scholar-Athlete, it was announced by Executive Director Jennifer Cardone on Wednesday. Gallick was a two-year leader for the VC women's basketball team, averaging 12.8 ppg over her career, including impressive double-double averages of 16.0 ppg. and 14.1 rpg. as a sophomore on her way to earning All-Western State Conference and All-State accolades.

Women's Basketball Has Strong Performance at Hancock

The Pirates' women's basketball team had four players in double-figures Wednesday as they pulled away from Allan Hancock College for a 67-44 victory in Santa Maria. Sam McKenzie slashed her way to 20 points while Alexa Coubal turned in 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Tiernan Phillips had a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards and Elena Ferrara turned in a strong performance with 10 points in the game. With the win, VC (14-8, 5-1) finishes the first round of Western State Conference play in second place in the standings.

Pirate Effort Falls Short in Non-Conference Setback

The Pirates' women's basketball team struggled at times, but still fought to the end in their 73-63 non-conference loss to Long Beach Monday at the Athletic Event Center. Alexa Coubal had another double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds and Sam McKenzie contributed 17 points, four boards and four steals. Tiernan Phillips turned in 14 points and grabbed nine caroms in the make-up date against the Vikings from Dec. 16.

Five in Double-Figures as VC Rallies Past SBCC

The Pirates' women's basketball team had all five starters score in double-figures Wednesday as they rallied from a first half deficit to defeat Santa Barbara 66-55. Sam McKenzie had 14 points to lead the way while Daphné LeBrun added 12. Alexis Howery and Alexa Coubal each scored 11 points and Tiernan Phillips tallied 10 points in the victory for Ventura (13-7, 4-1).
