Pirate Student Athletes Prominent on Dean's Lists for 22-23

Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2022-23, achieving an overall 3.29 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a 3.19 overall GPA in the spring semester.  A total of 108 Pirates achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher, earning mention on the Dean's List in the fall 2022 term while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 53 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In spring 2023, 110 VC student athletes were named on the Dean's List with 45 posting perfect GPA's.

Women's Tennis Named ITA All-Academic

The VC women's tennis team earned All-Academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the 2023 season. Their 3.56 overall grade point average qualified them to be one of 23 collegiate teams nationally, one of six California community college programs, to make the list. The Pirates also had seven players named Scholar Athletes by the national coaches' association.

Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts of the VC women's tennis team have been named CCCAA All-Americans by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The pair is being honored following their run to the state quarterfinal run at The Ojai Tournament to close the 2023 season.

The VC women's tennis team had four players named to the All-Western State Conference team following the 2023 regular season. Nell Elaerts, Alexis Schmidt and Elizabeth Nguyen earned the honors in both singles and doubles while Talia Lieb earned an All-WSC nod in doubles play.

Lieb and Elarts Finish Season in State Quarterfinals

The VC women's tennis season came to a close Saturday as the doubles team of Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts fell in the CCCAA State Doubles quarterfinals at The Ojai Tournament in a super tiebreaker.

Upset Win Sends Lieb and Elaerts to Quarterfinals

VC freshmen Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts are still alive in the CCCAA State Doubles Championships at The Ojai Tournament. The Pirates' No. 1 duo put together a pair of wins, including an upset of Northern California's No. 2-seeded team to advance to the state quarterfinals to be played Saturday at the Ojai Athletic Club.

Lieb and Elaerts Advance in The Ojai in Singles and Doubles

Ventura's Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts advanced in the CCCAA State Singles and Doubles Championships in both draws on Thursday in The Ojai Tournament. The pair posted a victory in the Round of 64 in doubles play after each moved forward with wins in the Round of 64 in singles.

Ventura's Nell Elaerts played a strong game at No. 1 singles and also had a solid effort with Alexis Schmidt in No. 1 doubles in VC's playoff loss at No. 1 Orange Coast Tuesday.
Women's Tennis Puts Up Fight in Loss

The shorthanded VC women's tennis team put up a solid fight at Orange Coast Tuesday, but fell 5-0 to the Southern California Regional's top seed. Ventura, the No. 7-seed, played without two regular players in their first playoff appearance since 2012. Nell Elaerts came back from a 4-0 deficit in No. 1 singles and dropped her first set 6-4 when OCC clinched the match while Alexis Schmidt was ahead early playing up at No. 2 before trailing 5-4 when play ended.

Women's Tennis Headed to the Playoffs

The VC women's tennis team has qualified for the Southern California Regional Playoffs which begin Tuesday April 11. Ventura (6-7) is he No. 7 seed in the draw and will travel to No. 1 Orange Coast in Costa Mesa Tuesday. This will be the Pirates' first playoff appearance since the 2012 season.

Lieb and Ealerts Take Second in WSC Doubles

VC's top doubles pair of Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts claimed second place in the Western State Conference championships completed Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. The duo fell to the top-seeded team from LA Mission in the final match of the four-day event.

VC freshman Talia Lieb advanced to the semifinals in the WSC singles tournament before bowing out on Saturday. She also teamed up with doubles partner Nell Elaerts to move into Tuesday's WSC doubles final.
Lieb & Elaerts Advance to WSC Title Match

Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts continued their strong play Saturday, advancing to the championship match in the Western State Conference doubles tournament with a semifinal win. Meanwhile Belladora Moga and Laura Rubio qualified for state with a victory in the backdraw. In singles play, Lieb moved into the semifinals before bowing out of the draw and Elaerts won her backdraw match to qualify for state.

VC's Nell Elaerts had a pair of three-set marathons in singles play Friday at the WSC Championships and partnered with Talia Lieb to move to the semifinals in doubles.
Lieb & Elaerts Move to Doubles Semi's at WSC

Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts won their doubles quarterfinal Friday at the Western State Conference Championships while Lieb also posted a pair of love, love wins in the singles draw to move to the quarterfinals Friday at the VC Tennis Center. Alexis Schmidt and Elizabeth Nguyen rebounded from a narrow loss in the doubles Round f 16 to win their match in the backdraw to qualify for state in late April at The Ojai.

First year player Alexis Schmidt won her first singles match in the WSC Championships 8-0, and paired with Elizabeth Nguyen to advance a round in doubles play Thursday at the VC Tennis Center.
Women's Tennis In Play at the WSC Championships

The VC women's tennis team remained in play Thursday at the Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships with the duos of Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts and Alexis Schmidt and Elizabeth Nguyen recirdunbg wins to advance in doubles play. Meanwhile, Belladora Moga, Schmidt, Lieb, Elaerts and Laura Rubio are still alive in the dingles draw.

VC's Marcie McTigue teamed up with Dee Emami to win in No. 3 doubles, then won in No. 5 singles as the Pirates defeated Santa Monica 8-1 on Tuesday.
Pirates Win Regular Season Finale

The VC women's tennis team won their regular season finale 8-1 at Santa Monica on Tuesday. Marcie McTugue and Dee Emami collectively gave up one game in capturing their doubled match and their individual singles matches. Nell Elaerts, Belladora Moga and Laura Rubio were also double winners against the Corsairs.

Ventura's Talia Lieb was a double-winner Friday, claiming the No. 1 doubles match at Orange Coast with Nell Elaerts before winning in No. 1 singles in VC's 7-2 setback to the Pirates from the South.
Ventura Drops Non-Conference Match at OCC

The VC women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to Orange Coast College Friday in Costa Mesa. Talia Lieb was a double-winner for the Pirates of VC, teaming up with Nell Elaerts to win in No. 1 doubles before defeating her Pirate opponent from OCC in No. 1 singles.

VC's Laura Rubio clinched the Pirates' sweep over Antelope Valley Thursday with a hard-fought victory in her No. 6 singles match at the VC Tennis Center.

The Ventura College women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 sweep over Antelope Valley Thursday at the VC Tennis Center. After three easy victories in doubles, play, Belladora Maga clinched the win in No. 4 singles and Laura Rubio closed out the sweep with a hard fought triumph in the No. 6 match.
