Pirates Split Quad, Make Lyans VC's Winningest Coach

The VC volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at the Pasadena Quad, dropping a 25-15, 29-27, 14-25, 25-18 decision to San Bernardino Valley before defeating Mt. San Jacinto, 25-15, 25-14, 25-17. With the victory in the nightcap, Ventura head coach Brad Lyans became the program's winningest coach with his 147 career victory in his 11th season at the helm of the Pirates.

In the opener at Pasadena City College, VC (2-4) dropped the first set to SBVC 25-15 before falling in a thrilling 29-27 second set. The Pirates came back to take the third 25-14 before falling to the pre-season No. 23-ranked Wolverines 25-18 to end the match. 

Daphne Raymond led the Pirate attack with 10 kills and a .391 hitting percentage against San Bernardino Valley while Talia Behrens and Callie Cahill each recorded seven winners. Liz Schalde and Skylar Rutherford contributed 19 and 15 assists, respectively. Makena Schaumloeffel hit eight services aces in the match and Rutherford hit five. Behrens and Raymond each had three blocks defensively for VC and Schaumloeffel registered 19 digs with Bryce Swain adding 14. 

The Pirates ended a four match losing streak, all against teams ranked in the pre-season Top-25, with a resounding sweep over pre-season No. 24 Mt. San Jacinto. The win gave Lyans 147 career victories, elevating him past former Pirate mentor Miki McFadden who accumulated 146 wins in 11 seasons from 1994-2004.

Ventura was dominant at the net, hitting .383 as a team as Cahill led the way with 11 kills and a .588 hitting percentage. Raymond totaled nine winners at .438 while Viola Barrios and Olivia Brown each added six kills. Schalde and Rutherford handed out 19 and 17 kills, respectively, and Sadie Lishman led the defensive effort with 10 digs. Schaumloeffel added a trio of aces to her day while Behrens and Raymond each totaled two blocks.

The Pirates will next return home on Friday Sept. 13 to host Citrus College at 6:00 pm.
