Pirate Spikers Sweep Past Cuesta
The VC volleyball team rode the momentum of a strong opening set in sweeping past Cuesta, 25-13, 25-22, 25-22 Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. Josephine Rausch led the effort with 12 kills while Daphne Raymond had 11 winners and a .391 hitting percentage. Addison Olson recorded eight kills at the net and Shai Daniels led the defensive effort with 31 digs.

Ventura came out hot, building leads of 5-2 and 9-6 on winners from Rausch and Raymond. Madison Mierau had her first kill for an 11-6 advantage and Raymond hit multiple winners to send VC ahead 16-7. Olson had a pair of big swings for leads of 18-8 and 23-12 before Raymond's kill clinched the first set, 25-13.
The Cougars came back with more energy in the second set, putting the Pirates down by scores of 15-9 and 18-11. Raymond had a huge swing, Olson recorded a winner and Rausch blocked a Cuesta attack to cut the deficit to 18-14 and Callie Cahill's kill brought Ventura back to within 18-17. The Pirates tied the score at 20 and Jocelyn Alfar hit an ace to put VC ahead for the first time in the set, 21-20. Cahill's block provided the clinching point and Ventura captured the set 25-22.
Raymond and Rausch gave the PIrates an early advantage in the third set, and Mierau's block expanded the count to 6-3. The Cougars came back to knot the score at 10-10 before Olson had three straight winners at the net to put VC back on top. After another tie score at 14, Olson again broke the stalemate and Monaye Ramessar hit an ace to make it 18-17 for Ventura. Raymond and Olson each provided big swings for a 22-20 VC margin and Rausch provided the winner following a Daniels dig to clinch the match. 25-22.
Valeria Ibarra handed out 20 assists and Ramessar recorded 16 helpers. Ibarra also had nine digs and Rausch recorded seven. Cahill had three blocks and Alfar won two duals at the net.
The Pirates (11-7, 4-3) next host Moorpark on Friday Oct. 24. The match is set to begin at 6:00 pm.
