Ventura Sweeps Two Matches on Beach

The VC beach volleyball team completes the first round of Western State Conference play Friday with two victories over Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, respectively, in play at Cal State Bakersfield. The Pirates defeated the Corsairs 4-1 in the first contest of the day before sweeping the Vaqueros 5-0 in the nightcap. Brooklyn Wallet and Faith Mackie won their four sets in two matches by an average score of 21-8.

VC defeated Santa Monica 4-1 in the first match of the day. Raphaella Rosales and Vanessa Ihrke won their No. 1 match 22-20, 21-15 while Morgan Gallagher and Jordan Neria won in the No. 2 slot, 22-20, 22-16. In an odd occurence, there was mix-up in opponents at the Nos. 3 and 5 matches. VC's No. 3 team of Shantalle Ruiz and Kasie Spencer defeated the Corsairs' No. 5 team 21-2, 21-4 while the Pirates' No. 5 duo of Payton Greiner and Kayla Hosch narrowly were beaten by SMC's No. 3 team 21-19, 17-21, 17-15. Wallet and Mackie easily won their match at No. 4, 21-14, 21-9.

In the nightcap, Ventura completed an undefeated first circuit of the WSC with the 5-0 win over Santa Barbara. Wallet and Mackie prevailed at No. 4 21-4, 21-6 while Gallagher and Neria won at No. 2, 21-16, 21-13. Rosales and Ihrke came from behind to win their No.1 match 16-21, 22-20, 15-12 and Ruiz and Spencer won at No. 3, when one of their opponents could not continue the match in the second set. Greiner and Hosch also won by default.  

VC returns home on Friday April 5, hosting Bakersfield and Santa Monica. Matches begin at the Harbor Cove Courts at the Ventura Marina at 10:00 am.
