VC freshman Donovan Chappell shot a 4-over 148 over 36 holes at the 3C2A Stta eChampionships Sunday and Monday, helping lead the Pirates to a sixth place finish as a team in their second straight state tournament appearance.

The VC golf team competed in the 3C2A State Championships Sunday and Monday at Silver Rock Resort in La Quinta, finishing in sixth place as a team. Freddie Carcamo and Donovan Chappell each totaled a 4-over 148 in the 36-hole event to tie for eighth place individually. The Pirates posted a team score of 612 in their second straight state tournament appearance.

VC freshman Freddie Carcamo tied for the low score Monday at the 3C2A Southern California Regionals before falling in a playoff to earn runner-up honors. VC tied its best-ever team finish placing third to qualify for next week's state champiosnhips.
Pirates Third, Carcamo Runner-Up at SoCal Regionals

The Pirate golf team took full advantage of playing close to home Monday, placing third as a team in the 3C2A Southern California Regionals, earning a berth to next weeks state championships. Freddie Carcamo tied for medalist honors in the 36-hole event, but came up short in the first playoff hole to earn runner-up honors. The third place team finish ties for the program's best finish ever in a regional, matching the team result in 2009.

The Ventura College golf team placed third overall at the 36-hole Western State Conference Championships Monday at Bakersfield's Sundale Country Club. Freddie Carcamo led the Pirate effort with a 73-71, 144 to place in a tie for sixth place individually while Matthew Jones carded a 70-77, 147 to place 11th. Nathan Shultz shot a 7276, 148 to finish in a tie for 12th. Both Carcamo and Jones earned All-WSC honors for their performance throughout the season on the links.

VC finishes a close third at WSC event at Soule Park

The Pirate golf team finished a close third on Monday at the Western State Conference event at Ojai's Soule Park Golf Course hosted by College of the Canyons. Ventura posted a team score of 304, four shots behind Santa Barbara and three behind the hosts. Freddie Carcamo again led VC with a 1-over 73, good for third place individually, a stroke off the medalist total. Nathan Schultz shot a 3-over 75 which tied him for fifth place overall.

The Pirate golf team competed at the Western State Conference event at Marshall Canyon Golf Course in LaVerne Monday, hosted by Citrus College. Led by a pair of 3-over 74's from Freddie Carcamo and Matthew Jones, Ventura finished fifth in the field of eight teams in the tightly-bunched contest.

The Pirates' men's golf team finished a disappointing sixth in the Western State Conference event hosted by Antelope Valley College at Rancho Vista Golf Course in Palmdale. Freddie Carcamo fired an even par 72 to lead Ventura on the day, finishing in a tie for fourth place individually.

The VC men's golf team placed second Monday at the Western State Conference event hosted at River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard, the Pirates' home course. Freddie Carcamo had an excellent day shooting an even-par 72 to tie for second individually. Matthew Jones shot a one-over 73 and Donovan Chappell was three over par. With the second-place finish, Ventura moves into a tie for second in the overall conference standings.

The Ventura College golf team posted its best socre of the year Monday, carding a 296 to finish third in the Western State Conference event hosted by Santa Barbara. Matthew Jones shot an outstanding 3-uner 69 to finish second individually and Nathan Shultz recorded the first hole-in-one in at least 25 years for the Pirates, finishing with a 1-over 73 placing 12th.

Carcamo finished in a tie for second overall while Donovan Chappel shot a 2-over 74 to tie for fifth. The Pirates carded a score of 304 as a team, their best combined score of the season.

Freddie Carcamo and Matthew Jones each carded 6-over 78's to tie for eighth.

The VC golf team turned in its third straight score of 316 Monday to place 11th of 15 teams at the Riverside Invitational at Victoria Country Club Monday. Freddie Carcamo paced Ventura with a 4-over 76 to tie for 20th place overall. Matt Jones posted a 6-over 78 for the Pirates.

Men's Golf Wins 2025 3C2A State Scholar Team Award

The 2025 Ventura College men's golf team has been named as the California Community College Athletic Association State Scholar Team for the 2024-25 academic year in a release by the 3C2A this week. This is the first State Scholar Team award for the golf team and the VC Athletic Department's 44th award overall since the program's inception in 1997-98. Ventura has been awarded at least one state team academic award in 24 of the past 25 non-covid academic years.

VC Golf Finishes Fifth in Tight WSC Event

With new rules governing 3C2A golf in 2026, event standings have tightened up. In the first Western State Conference meet of the season, the Pirates' golf team finished fifth of eight teams, grouped in a bunch of five teams all within two strokes of each other. Bradley Humphrey led Ventura with a 3-over 75 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale as VC posted a team score of 316.

The VC golf team placed seventh of 16 teams at the season-opening Pt. Conception Open at La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc Sunday and Monday.

The VC golf team opened the 2026 season with a seventh -place finish at the Pt. Conception Open held at the par-72 La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc. The Pirates posted team scores of 316 and 326 Sunday and monday, respectively, to total 642 strokes, two shots behind a fifth-place tie with Citrus and San Joaquin Delta. Donovan Chappel led Ventura individually, recording 6-over 78's on both days ofthe tournament for a total of 156 to tie for ninth place overall.

Pirate Athletics Excels in the Classroom in 2024-25

Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2024-25 with a total of 101 Pirates achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher, earning mention on the Dean's List, in the fall 2024 term while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 46 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In spring 2025, 99 VC student athletes were named on the Dean's List with 44 posting perfect GPA's.

When the best golfers in the world tee up on Thursday in the first round of the 125th United States Open Golf Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA, there will be a Pirate among them. Ventura College alumnsu Joey Herrera '18 qualified for the field in the National Championship on June 2 and will be among the competitors seeking the championship trophy and the Jack Nicklaus medal.
